Manchester City agree £125m Enzo Fernandez transfer with Chelsea

Manchester City have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Enzo Fernandez for £125million, bringing one of the summer's biggest transfer sagas towards a conclusion on Deadline Day.

The 25-year-old Argentina international had been pushing for a move away from Stamford Bridge throughout the summer and will now reunite with Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium.

Fernandez had initially favoured a move to Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants decided against pursuing the midfielder. City subsequently emerged as his most realistic destination and have now struck an agreement with Chelsea.

City intensified their efforts during the final hours of the transfer window after Chelsea had initially demanded around £130m for Fernandez.

An agreement has now been reached at £125m, allowing the midfielder to move to Manchester after weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future.

The transfer represents a substantial return for Chelsea and ends a situation that had increasingly become a distraction for Xabi Alonso.

Fernandez had already been omitted from Chelsea's squad against Brighton amid his desire to leave. Alonso made his position clear at the time, stressing that he wanted players who were completely focused on the club.

Chelsea had also been reluctant to sanction a sale without identifying potential replacements.

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott emerged as their preferred option, but the Cherries rejected a £64m offer earlier in the summer and also rebuffed Chelsea's latest enquiries.

The move will reunite Fernandez with Maresca after the pair previously worked together at Chelsea.

Maresca managed the Blues from July 2024 until January 2026 before eventually taking charge at Manchester City, and his existing relationship with Fernandez has helped make the Etihad an attractive destination.

The Argentine had initially hoped Real Madrid would provide his route out of Stamford Bridge.

However, Madrid showed no interest in completing the transfer, forcing Fernandez to consider alternatives as he continued pushing for an exit.

City ultimately provided the opportunity he wanted.

Fernandez becomes another enormous investment in City's midfield rebuild.

Maresca's squad has already undergone significant changes, with Ayyoub Bouaddi arriving for €100m and Nico Gonzalez departing for Newcastle United.

City had been prepared to make Fernandez one of the most expensive players in their history and have now committed £125m to secure a midfielder already proven at Premier League level.

For Chelsea, attention immediately turns towards how Alonso replaces him.

Scott had been identified as the leading candidate, but Bournemouth's refusal to sell means the Blues may have to pursue an alternative solution during the final hours of Deadline Day.

Fernandez must complete the remaining transfer formalities before his move to the Etihad Stadium can be officially announced.

Chelsea, meanwhile, face a race against the deadline to determine whether another midfielder can be signed after agreeing to sell one of Alonso's most important players.
