Brentford are closing in on the signing of Mamadou Sangaré, and the midfielder's former youth coach believes the move to west London is the perfect next step in his career.
The Bees are expected to complete a deal worth around €48 million for the Lens midfielder, who enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in Ligue 1 and was named the Best African Player in France last season.
Ahead of the transfer, former Yeelen Olympique coach Mohamed Diarra has offered an insight into the player Brentford are about to sign.
Former coach predicts huge future
Diarra revealed Sangaré's talent was obvious from an early age, describing the midfielder as one of the most focused youngsters he had ever worked with.
"He's a shy kid, but incredibly intelligent and quick to react."
He also praised the 22-year-old's professionalism away from the pitch.
"His life revolves around TV and football. He is constantly focused and never gets distracted."
Diarra even suggested Sangaré has the potential to become one of Africa's greatest players.
"We used to say that if he didn't go on to win the African Ballon d'Or, it would be a waste of talent."
Brentford move almost complete
Reports this week indicate Brentford are close to agreeing a five-year contract with the Lens midfielder.
Sangaré is expected to arrive after an outstanding season in which he helped Lens finish second in Ligue 1 and qualify for the Champions League.
His performances attracted interest from several of Europe's biggest clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Juventus and Real Madrid.
Why Brentford is the perfect destination
Despite the interest from Europe's elite, Diarra believes Brentford offers the ideal environment for Sangaré's continued development.
"Brentford is a good choice."
The former coach explained that the Premier League club can offer patience and stability that may not exist at football's biggest sides.
"At Brentford, they can afford to be patient, unlike Chelsea or Real Madrid. He will adapt better to the demands of English football."
That belief is shared by Brentford, who see Sangaré as a key addition for the future following his rapid rise through European football.
