Claus Costa has admitted replacing Luka Vušković will be “impossible” once the defender returns to Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The teenage centre-back has enjoyed a sensational loan spell with Hamburger SV and is now regarded as one of the most exciting young defenders in European football.
Luka Vuskovic’s loan spell transformed HSV defence
Vušković arrived in Germany last summer and quickly established himself as a crucial figure in Hamburg’s back line despite still being only 19 years old.
The Tottenham defender’s performances have earned widespread recognition throughout the Bundesliga campaign.
Among his achievements this season:
- Bundesliga Rookie of the Month four times
- Fan-voted Bundesliga Player of the Season midway through the campaign
- Nominations for Bundesliga Team of the Season and overall Player of the Season
Having followed Vušković’s development closely this year, the most striking aspect has arguably been his maturity rather than purely his physical attributes.
The Croatian has combined aggressive defending with composure in possession and leadership qualities rarely seen in players his age.
HSV had hoped to extend his stay beyond this season, but the growing feeling inside Germany is that the defender has now outgrown the level they can realistically offer.
HSV chief delivers emotional verdict on Tottenham youngster
Speaking to Hamburger Abendblatt, sporting director Costa openly acknowledged how difficult replacing Vušković will become.
“Replacing him with someone of equal calibre will be impossible.” — Claus Costa
Costa also highlighted the extraordinary maturity the defender displayed throughout the season.
“At 18, he exemplified things in the dressing room that you would normally expect from a 28-year-old.” — Claus Costa
The Hamburg executive additionally referenced the emotional significance surrounding the Vušković family name at the club.
“Luka is an exceptional player, but also an exceptional personality.” — Claus Costa

Tottenham facing major decision over Vušković future
The biggest question now concerns what Tottenham decide to do next.
Reports across Europe increasingly suggest Spurs intend to integrate Vušković into the first-team squad next season regardless of their league situation.
However, his performances have also attracted serious attention from elite clubs around Europe.
FC Barcelona have already been linked repeatedly, while several other major clubs are believed to be monitoring developments closely.
There are also suggestions the player himself has ambitious plans for his next career step and may seek guarantees regarding his role before fully committing long term.
That combination could easily turn Vušković into one of the most discussed young defenders of the summer transfer window.
What’s next?
Tottenham are expected to assess Vušković closely during pre-season before finalising plans for his immediate future.
Spurs may choose to build around the Croatian as part of a new defensive era, though continued interest from Europe’s elite clubs could complicate matters if uncertainty emerges around playing time.
HSV, meanwhile, now face the difficult challenge of replacing a defender who became both a tactical leader and fan favourite in remarkably little time.
Should Tottenham build their future defence around Luka Vušković immediately, or would another loan move benefit his development more?
