Brighton prepare £60m bid for Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall

Brighton & Hove Albion are preparing a major move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall, with the Seagulls reportedly willing to meet Spurs' valuation of the Sweden international in a deal worth close to £60 million.

The 20-year-old has emerged as one of Brighton's leading midfield targets this summer, with the club looking to strengthen following Brajan Gruda's return to RB Leipzig on a loan-to-buy agreement. Tottenham have already rejected approaches from Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, but Brighton's willingness to match the asking price could significantly alter the transfer race.

Brighton's recruitment department have identified Bergvall as a priority signing and are prepared to invest heavily to secure his services.

Reports suggest Tottenham value the midfielder at close to £60 million, a figure Brighton are now considering meeting. If completed, the transfer would become the most expensive signing in the club's history, surpassing the deal agreed earlier this summer for former Spurs defender Luka Vušković, which could eventually reach around £50 million.

It would also mean Brighton spending more than £100 million on players signed from Tottenham during the current transfer window.

Brighton are not the only Premier League club monitoring Bergvall's situation.

Nottingham Forest have held extensive discussions over a possible transfer and remain interested after seeing an earlier bid rejected by Spurs. Newcastle United are also reported to have failed with an approach.

However, Brighton's readiness to meet Tottenham's valuation has strengthened their position as they look to convince both club and player.

Bergvall's future has become increasingly uncertain following Tottenham's significant investment in midfield.

The arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes in deals worth a combined £185 million have intensified competition for places, leading to speculation that the Sweden international could seek regular first-team football elsewhere.

During the 2025/26 Premier League season, Bergvall made 23 league appearances, with 13 coming as a substitute. He contributed one goal and three assists despite limited starts.

Reports also suggest the midfielder has indicated he would consider leaving Tottenham after recognising that opportunities could remain restricted.

Born in Stockholm, Bergvall began his career with IF Brommapojkarna before making his senior debut in Sweden's second division in July 2022.

He moved to Djurgården the following year and quickly established himself in the Allsvenskan, attracting interest from several of Europe's biggest clubs.

Tottenham secured his signature in February 2024 on a five-year contract in a deal reportedly worth £8.5 million, beating competition from Barcelona to complete the transfer.

Now, less than three years later, Spurs could be in line for a substantial profit should they decide to sanction a sale.

Brighton are expected to decide whether to formalise their interest with an official bid in the coming days. Tottenham must weigh the financial value of a potential £60 million sale against Bergvall's long-term potential, while Nottingham Forest continue to monitor developments in the hope of reviving their own pursuit.
