Nottingham Forest loanee Lorenzo Lucca told he must improve by Napoli

Former Nottingham Forest loanee Lorenzo Lucca has been told he still has plenty to prove after returning to Napoli, with sporting director Giovanni Manna insisting the striker must improve if he wants a future at the Serie A champions.

Lucca endured a disappointing loan spell at the City Ground during the second half of last season, scoring just once in the Premier League before injuries disrupted his campaign.

Now back in Italy, the 25-year-old faces another battle to establish himself.

Speaking during a press conference, Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna admitted Lucca possesses several positive qualities but insisted significant improvement is still required.

Manna stressed that the striker understands where he needs to develop and made it clear the responsibility now rests with the player to take the next step.

He also acknowledged Napoli may have paid more than expected to sign Lucca but believes the club must now help him fulfil his potential.

Lucca joined Nottingham Forest on loan in January hoping regular Premier League football would reignite his progress.

Instead, the move proved frustrating.

The Italian managed just one league goal before injuries curtailed his season, while questions over his consistency prevented him from establishing himself as a regular starter.

Manna also made it clear that Lucca has not yet shown enough to prove he belongs at Napoli.

Although the club remain prepared to support his development, the striker must earn his place through improved performances once he returns from injury.

Competition for places means opportunities are unlikely to come easily during the new campaign.

Lucca previously flourished as the focal point of Udinese's attack, performances that earned him international recognition and his move to Napoli.

However, with his pathway to regular first-team football looking increasingly limited, another transfer could offer the best opportunity to rebuild his career.

Finding a club where he can play consistently may now be the key to rediscovering the form that first attracted Napoli.

Lorenzo Lucca will continue his recovery before attempting to impress Napoli during pre-season. If first-team opportunities appear limited, another move could become the most realistic option before the transfer window closes.
