Liverpool plan for Alexander Isak revealed as Arne Slot drops Atletico Madrid selection hint underlines the careful approach being taken with the £125 million striker. Supporters were surprised not to see Isak even on the bench for Sunday’s late 1-0 win at Burnley, but Slot insists the decision was made with a demanding week in mind.

Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday before facing Everton in Saturday’s Merseyside Derby. Slot confirmed Isak will be held back until one of those fixtures, with a strict plan to build his fitness after a disrupted summer.

Slot: “Isak is far from ready for three games a week”

Speaking before kick-off at Turf Moor, Slot explained his reasoning for leaving the Swede out entirely.

“We think, with a week when we play three games in seven days, this is the best lead-up for him to be available against Atletico Madrid. Alex is far from ready for that schedule of three games in a week, 90 minutes. We could use him today for five minutes and then Wednesday again 10, and then 15, but we don’t believe that is the way to build him up.” — Arne Slot

Instead, Slot has designed a programme that will see Isak introduced for at least 45 minutes in one of the next two fixtures, but not both.

The pre-season Isak never had

Isak’s absence from Newcastle training and matches before forcing his move to Anfield left him short of condition. Slot described his situation as essentially starting a new pre-season:

“We got him from Newcastle in a state where you could say his pre-season is going to start now. He needs proper minutes of training before he has a certain base, let alone for him to play twice in three days.” — Arne Slot

Sweden’s management also held him back during the recent international break, giving him intensive sessions without overexposing him in matches. Slot praised that decision, noting it allowed Liverpool to continue the same cautious buildup.

sak’s record at Newcastle

Liverpool fans are understandably eager to see their new number nine in action. At Newcastle during the 2024/25 season, Isak scored an impressive 27 goals and provided six assists in 42 appearances across all competitions. His pace, finishing, and movement made him one of Europe’s most feared forwards, earning him the record-breaking switch to Anfield.

Those numbers highlight the quality Liverpool have added, but also explain Slot’s determination not to risk a player who could define the club’s season.

Analyst verdict – by John William

Slot is right to take the long view. Liverpool’s campaign will not be defined by Burnley away, but by how effectively Isak integrates into their system for the Champions League and the title race. Managing his workload now could pay dividends later.

However, supporters’ patience will be tested if results dip while the club’s record signing remains on the sidelines. Slot’s insistence on fitness foundations is admirable, but the demand for immediate impact is unavoidable when £125 million has been spent.

Key insights

  • Isak omitted from Burnley squad to preserve fitness.
  • Slot says he will play “45 minutes as a minimum” this week — either vs Atletico or Everton.
  • Liverpool treating his situation as a “new pre-season” after Newcastle exile.
  • Isak scored 27 goals and 6 assists for Newcastle last season.
  • Liverpool face Atletico (Wed) and Everton (Sat) in a pivotal week.

What’s next for Liverpool and Isak?

Isak’s debut looks set for Wednesday against Atletico Madrid, though Slot has left the door open for him to instead feature in the Merseyside Derby. Either way, his first minutes in a Liverpool shirt are imminent.

With Mohamed Salah back among the goals and the champions unbeaten, Isak’s arrival adds yet another dimension. The key now is ensuring he is fit enough to deliver consistently in a season that will demand both stamina and ruthlessness.

👉 Should Isak make his Liverpool debut in Europe against Atletico — or save his first bow for the fire of the Merseyside Derby?

Even with Isak I dont see Liverpool playing good football. Wirtz came in to help and create, but he's been very bad.
