Liam Delap Chelsea transfer 2025: The 22-year-old striker has revealed why he turned down Manchester United and others in favour of a £30m switch to Chelsea — and his answer will fire up fans in west London.

After scoring 12 goals in a struggling Ipswich side that was relegated from the Premier League, Delap became one of the most sought-after young No.9s on the market. United led the chase. Newcastle circled. Everton made contact. But it was Chelsea who acted decisively — triggering his release clause and winning the race.

Why Delap Snubbed United for Chelsea

“I’ve got a good relationship with the manager. I’ve played in this system before… The project of the club — how they see the future — that’s what excited me.” — Liam Delap

Delap confirmed talks were held with United, but cited familiarity with Chelsea’s tactical system, relationships with current squad members, and the long-term vision of the club as the key factors.

Chelsea Get a Ready-Made No.9

Delap’s 12-goal return in a relegated team speaks volumes. Ipswich were often pinned back in games, but Delap showed physicality, sharp finishing and movement that made him a handful even against top-tier defences. Chelsea believe they’re getting a striker who is both Premier League-ready and nowhere near his ceiling.

United Left Reeling as Alternatives Dry Up

Manchester United, still desperate for a No.9, now find themselves back at square one. Talks continue over long-standing targets like Viktor Gyökeres, Victor Osimhen and Hugo Ekitike, but Delap was seen as the most attainable, Premier League-proven option.

Chelsea pull is different.. To be honest every player would play for another club in the top 6 rather than United and thats because they havent been performing well, simple. United still a big club, probably still the biggest in the UK, bot for years it has been very bad.
