Lewis Hall set to sign new Newcastle United contract after Manchester United interest

Lewis Hall is set to commit his future to Newcastle United after reaching an agreement over a new contract at St James’ Park.

The left-back’s future had been the subject of considerable attention during the summer transfer window, with Manchester United identifying Hall as their number one target for the position.

However, Newcastle refused to entertain a departure after already losing several important players during a summer of major change.

Now, rather than considering an exit, Hall is preparing to extend his stay on Tyneside.

Contract discussions have accelerated over the past few weeks, with Hall understood to have been impressed by new Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle.

The 21-year-old remains an important part of Newcastle’s plans and the early relationship with Jaissle has helped provide further encouragement about his long-term future at the club.

For Newcastle, securing Hall to improved terms also represents an important piece of business after a turbulent transfer window.

The Magpies allowed several key figures to leave during the summer, including midfielders Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimarães. That made keeping other members of the first-team core particularly important.

Hall was among the players Newcastle were determined not to lose.

Manchester United had identified Hall as their number one left-back target during the summer and were interested in bringing him to Old Trafford.

Newcastle, however, made it clear that the England international was not for sale.

After sanctioning several significant departures, the club were unwilling to weaken Jaissle’s squad further by allowing one of their most highly rated young players to leave.

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson has subsequently made extending Hall’s contract a priority.

An agreement has now been reached, providing Newcastle with another player around whom they can build under Jaissle.

For Hall, the decision also offers stability and the opportunity to continue developing as Newcastle’s first-choice option on the left side of defence.

Newcastle are now expected to finalise Hall’s new contract and confirm the extension. Attention will then turn to his development under Jaissle as the club attempts to build a new core following the significant changes made during the summer transfer window.
