Justin Kluivert has revealed Ronald Koeman has already outlined his plans for the Netherlands squad ahead of the World Cup, with the Bournemouth attacker accepting the role assigned to him as competition for places heats up.
The Dutch international is part of a talented Netherlands squad heading into the tournament, but faces a challenge to break into a midfield group widely regarded as one of the strongest areas of Koeman's team.
Despite the fierce competition, Kluivert insists every player understands where they stand after direct conversations with the Netherlands manager.
Koeman provides clarity before World Cup opener
Kluivert’s inclusion in the squad comes after a difficult period earlier this year.
The Bournemouth star underwent knee surgery and missed 18 matches for club and country before returning to action at the beginning of May. His recovery was enough to convince Koeman to include him in the World Cup group, but the 27-year-old knows there are no guarantees over playing time.
Speaking about discussions with the Netherlands boss, Kluivert explained that Koeman had taken time to speak individually with players regarding their expected role during the tournament.
“Koeman has spoken to everyone about their role and how he sees things at the moment.
“For the first match against Japan, but also for later in the tournament. So that you have a bit of an idea of your place in the team.
“He made that clear to me as well. I accept my role in the team, and I give 100% in every role.”

Competition remains fierce in Dutch midfield
Much of the discussion surrounding the Netherlands squad has focused on Koeman's preferred midfield trio.
Frenkie de Jong, Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders are widely viewed as the strongest combination available, leaving several talented players battling for opportunities elsewhere in the side.
Kluivert, however, believes the Netherlands benefit from having alternative profiles available.
The Bournemouth attacker is capable of operating in several advanced positions and feels squad depth could prove crucial as the tournament progresses.
Having followed the Netherlands throughout recent international competitions, versatility has often been one of their greatest strengths when navigating long tournaments against different styles of opposition.
Bournemouth star believes alternatives can help
While acknowledging the quality of the established midfield options, Kluivert suggested the Netherlands should not overlook the value of players offering something different.
“We know there’s a lot of talk about the dream midfield: Frenkie, Gravenberch and Tijjani.
“We’ve got other options there too, like me. Perhaps that might work better for the Dutch national team.
“But again: we’re all good players, so it’s hard to say.”
