Tottenham had Palhinha transfer priority before deal collapsed over Bayern demands

João Palhinha reportedly gave priority to joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer before Spurs decided against meeting the financial conditions required to complete a deal with Bayern Munich.

The Portugal international eventually returned home to join Benfica, but Sporting president Frederico Varandas has now revealed Tottenham were initially Palhinha's preferred destination.

Sporting were also interested in bringing their former midfielder back to Lisbon and explored the possibility of a deal.

However, Varandas explained that Palhinha wanted to wait for Tottenham.

“Sporting were interested in the possibility of João Palhinha returning to the club,” Varandas said.

“At that point, Palhinha gave priority to Tottenham. Tottenham did not accept the financial conditions that were being demanded and Sporting could not wait for Palhinha.”

That provides a clearer picture of Tottenham's involvement.

Spurs had a player willing to make the move, but ultimately decided the financial package required was not attractive enough.

Sporting were unwilling to wait indefinitely and were also reluctant to make the level of investment required for a 31-year-old midfielder.

“If the conditions Palhinha and Bayern demanded from Sporting were the same, Sporting would not have moved forward,” Varandas explained.

“It’s simply not our sporting project or our strategy to invest tens of millions of euros in a 31-year-old player.”

That effectively removed two potential destinations from the equation.

Palhinha's future remained uncertain after the Tottenham route collapsed.

Aston Villa subsequently spent considerable time working on a deal, while Newcastle United also entered the race and reportedly offered Bayern more attractive terms for a permanent transfer.

Neither move materialised.

Instead, Palhinha returned to Portugal and signed for Sporting's major rivals Benfica, where he has reunited with former Fulham manager Marco Silva.

Palhinha's move to Benfica closes the door on a Premier League return this summer, while Tottenham must move forward with their other midfield plans. For Spurs, the revelation confirms the opportunity was there — they simply decided the financial package did not represent sufficient value.
