Jérémy Jacquet has described playing alongside Virgil van Dijk as “fantastic” after making an impressive start to life at Liverpool.

The Reds spent more than £60million to sign the young French centre-back from Stade Rennais during the summer as the successor to Ibrahima Konaté.

Jacquet has quickly established himself as a regular at Anfield and his performances have also earned him his first senior appearance for France during the current international break.

Jacquet loving life at Liverpool

The speed of Jacquet’s rise has been significant, but the defender believes Liverpool’s dressing room has helped make his transition easier.

“I've had a fantastic time,” Jacquet told Telefoot.

“It all happened very quickly. We have a good group and everything is going well at the moment.”

His partnership with Van Dijk has been particularly important.

The experienced Liverpool captain has spent years operating among Europe’s leading centre-backs, and Jacquet admits working alongside him has demonstrated just how high his level remains.

“Playing with Virgil van Dijk is fantastic,” Jacquet said.

“When you know what kind of defender he is, you know there are very few defenders who can match his level.”

For a young centre-back adapting to Liverpool and Premier League football, having Van Dijk alongside him provides an experienced figure to learn from.

Pogba remains Jacquet’s idol

Despite being a defender, Jacquet revealed that another French star has always been his footballing role model.

“Paul Pogba has always been my role model,” he said. “He still is. I've always watched him.”

Jacquet’s own career is now accelerating rapidly.

A major summer transfer to Liverpool has been followed by a regular starting position and his senior France breakthrough, marking an impressive opening few months of the season.
