Jeremie Frimpong has been backed for a surprise move from Liverpool to Chelsea, with former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta suggesting a reunion with Xabi Alonso could help revive the Dutchman's fortunes.

The Liverpool defender arrived at Anfield less than a year ago following an impressive spell under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. However, an injury-hit first season on Merseyside has left questions surrounding his long-term role, particularly following the departure of Arne Slot.

Those circumstances have fuelled speculation that Frimpong could emerge as a transfer target for Chelsea as Alonso begins shaping his squad at Stamford Bridge.

Xabi Alonso reunion could make sense

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, Mendieta explained why Chelsea may consider bringing Frimpong to west London despite the player only recently joining Liverpool.

The former Spain midfielder believes existing relationships between coaches and players often play an important role in transfer decisions.

"Jeremie Frimpong could be a good asset for Xabi Alonso at Chelsea," Mendieta said.

"Managers have players they trust from previous clubs and there will be a belief from the player that they can find that form again."

Frimpong enjoyed the best football of his career under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, playing a major role in the German club's historic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double-winning campaign.

His pace, attacking output and ability to operate as both a full-back and wing-back made him one of the most dangerous wide players in European football during that period.

Difficult first season at Liverpool

Frimpong's debut campaign at Liverpool failed to build on that momentum.

The Dutch international suffered a hamstring injury during his Premier League debut and struggled to establish consistency after returning to action.

While Liverpool initially viewed him as an important addition, managerial changes have naturally altered the outlook for several players signed under the previous regime.

Having followed Liverpool's recruitment under Slot, Frimpong appeared ideally suited to the attacking demands placed on wide defenders. Whether the club's next manager sees the same long-term role for him remains uncertain.

However, it remains too early to suggest Liverpool are actively looking to sell the defender after only one season.

Competition at Chelsea would be intense

Any move to Stamford Bridge would not guarantee regular football.

Reece James remains Chelsea's first-choice option on the right side when fully fit, while Malo Gusto continues to provide strong competition despite recent transfer speculation.

Nevertheless, Alonso's tactical systems have historically relied heavily on dynamic wing-backs, a role perfectly suited to Frimpong's strengths.

At Bayer Leverkusen, those wide players were often among the team's most influential attacking outlets.

That tactical fit may explain why Frimpong continues to be linked with clubs managed by coaches familiar with his qualities.

Cucurella expected to remain important

Mendieta also discussed Marc Cucurella's future amid reported interest from Barcelona.

The former Spain international believes the Chelsea defender is likely to remain at Stamford Bridge despite suggestions he could return to Spain.

"I’m not sure we'll see him leave this season, especially with Xabi Alonso coming in."

"I'm sure Xabi will trust him and want him in the team."

Mendieta highlighted Cucurella's tactical intelligence and versatility, qualities that would suit Alonso's demanding approach.

"Cucurella will be a key player under Xabi Alonso."

"He plays with full-backs quite offensively. It's very demanding physically because you have to support the midfield."

Key Points

  • Jeremie Frimpong has been linked with a move to Chelsea.
  • Gaizka Mendieta believes a reunion with Xabi Alonso would make sense.
  • Frimpong previously excelled under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
  • His first season at Liverpool was disrupted by injury.
  • Marc Cucurella is expected to remain an important player under Alonso.

What’s Next

Chelsea are expected to remain active in the transfer market as Alonso begins implementing his vision for the squad. Outgoings may be required before major additions are completed, particularly given the club's large group of senior players.

For Frimpong, much may depend on Liverpool's plans under their new management structure and whether the defender is viewed as part of the long-term project.

While no concrete move has emerged, the existing relationship with Alonso ensures the speculation is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

Would Frimpong benefit from reuniting with Alonso at Chelsea, or should Liverpool give him another season to prove himself at Anfield?
