Jamie Carragher questions Mohamed Salah’s Trabzonspor move after Liverpool exit

Jamie Carragher has questioned Mohamed Salah's decision to join Trabzonspor, insisting the Liverpool legend is still capable of performing at one of Europe's biggest clubs.

The Egyptian forward recently completed a free transfer to the Turkish side after bringing his trophy-laden spell at Anfield to an end. While Salah received a hero's welcome from Trabzonspor supporters, Carragher believes the move represents a step down for a player of his quality.

Speaking on the Football Ramble podcast, the former Liverpool defender admitted he never expected Salah to continue his career in Turkey.

"I never believed he was going to go to Saudi because, number one, he's too good for that. I think he can still be playing in Serie A. Turkey, for me, feels a level too low."

Carragher revealed he expected Salah to join one of Italy's traditional giants instead.

"I was convinced he'd end up at an AC Milan or Juventus. I thought he'd want to play at a real prestigious club."

Carragher suggested Salah may have been priced out of Europe's elite by his salary demands, despite believing the winger still has the ability to compete at the highest level.

Trabzonspor are reportedly set to pay the Egyptian around €17 million per season, with the Turkish club hoping his arrival can help close the gap on domestic rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe.

Although Trabzonspor will compete in the Europa League, Carragher believes Salah could still have succeeded in one of Europe's top five leagues.

Salah is expected to make his competitive debut for Trabzonspor later this month as the Turkish club begins its domestic and European campaigns. Carragher's comments are unlikely to change the forward's plans, with the 34-year-old beginning a new chapter after an illustrious spell at Liverpool.
