Ian Maatsen backed for Netherlands role after Aston Villa display against PSG

Ian Maatsen has been tipped to become the Netherlands' first-choice left-back after impressing during Aston Villa's UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 24-year-old started at left-back following Lucas Digne's summer move to PSG, and his display has prompted fresh backing from former Netherlands internationals Theo Janssen and Danny Blind ahead of the new season.

Maatsen was handed a starting role by Unai Emery as Aston Villa narrowly lost 2-1 to the Champions League holders.

The Dutch defender produced an encouraging performance, particularly in possession, with former midfielder Theo Janssen believing it could also benefit the Netherlands national team.

"It's good for the Dutch national team, too, of course.

"He was in the picture for a while; he's a talented player, especially in possession. He has great attacking qualities, though he certainly still needs to make strides defensively. But I think he is very, very good on the ball."

Janssen also admitted he was surprised Maatsen had not featured more prominently for the Netherlands in recent years.

The former international questioned previous selection decisions, suggesting the Aston Villa defender should have been considered ahead of players operating out of position.

At one point, all the left-backs were being considered.

"And when you look at who we ultimately played for the national team (Micky van de Ven) that's certainly not a left-back. That was a strange choice anyway."

Former Netherlands coach Danny Blind believes Maatsen is now perfectly placed to establish himself at both club and international level.

With Lucas Digne no longer at Villa Park, Blind expects the defender to receive regular opportunities under Emery, provided he maintains a consistent level of performance.

"He played in the 2024 Champions League final against Real with Dortmund and played really well then.

"You have to maintain that level; right now, you have to keep proving yourself. He's likely going to get his chance now. In principle, he's the number one; Digne is gone."

Maatsen's increased role at Aston Villa could significantly strengthen his international prospects if he delivers consistent performances throughout the Premier League season. However, he will still need to prove he can improve defensively while maintaining the attacking quality that has earned widespread praise.

Maatsen is expected to begin the Premier League season as Aston Villa's first-choice left-back following Digne's departure. Strong performances under Unai Emery would enhance his chances of becoming the Netherlands' preferred option in the position as competition for places ahead of future international fixtures intensifies.
