Hull City owner demands serious Manchester City punishment if charges are proven

Hull City owner Acun Ilıcalı has delivered a strong verdict on Manchester City’s reported financial charges, comparing any proven breaches to doping in sport.

The Manchester City case continues to generate debate across English football, with Ilıcalı now becoming one of the more prominent club owners to publicly discuss the situation.

And the Hull chairman believes there should be significant consequences if the allegations against City are ultimately proven.

Speaking in his native Türkiye, Ilıcalı argued that breaking financial regulations to build a stronger squad would amount to what he described as “financial doping”.

“If Manchester City did what is alleged, I think it is no different from winning an Olympic medal through doping,” Ilıcalı said, according to Futbol Arena.

“At the end of the day, this is financial doping. They brought in the best players with massive sums of money by breaking the rules.”

Importantly, Ilıcalı made his position conditional on the allegations being proven rather than treating City as already guilty.

Manchester City have consistently disputed the allegations against them.

Ilıcalı also believes any punishment would need to be sufficiently severe to act as a deterrent.

“If you impose only a minor penalty, then everyone will do it,” he said.

“For the sake of football’s future – and a clean future – such actions, if they have indeed occurred, must be punished; people should not be allowed to get away with doing such things.”

The comments add another voice to a debate that has spread throughout English football.

Previous Premier League financial cases have inevitably created comparisons over what an appropriate sanction should look like, although the circumstances surrounding each case are different.

For Ilıcalı, however, the principle is straightforward: if serious financial breaches are established, the punishment cannot be insignificant.

Attention remains on the outcome of Manchester City’s case and what consequences could follow if any breaches are established.

The scale of a potential punishment remains one of the biggest questions. Previous financial sanctions against Premier League clubs will inevitably be discussed when assessing consistency, but City’s case has its own circumstances and would need to be judged accordingly.

Ilıcalı has nevertheless made his position clear. The Hull owner believes that if the allegations are proven, English football needs a punishment strong enough to discourage clubs from viewing financial breaches as a risk worth taking.

Until an official outcome is confirmed, however, debate over potential sanctions remains hypothetical.
