Harry Kane believes England are entering the 2026 World Cup with the strongest squad in the nation's history as the captain prepares to lead his country in another attempt to end nearly six decades of World Cup disappointment.

Speaking ahead of the tournament in North America, Kane expressed confidence in Thomas Tuchel's group after England progressed comfortably through qualification and continued building momentum under the German coach.

England arrive among the leading contenders after consecutive European Championship final appearances under Gareth Southgate, and Kane feels the balance of experience and emerging talent has created a squad capable of going all the way.

"I think our squad is as good as we've ever had," Kane said.

"I think when you look at the starting XI, you look at the players coming off the bench, we're going into the tournament as one of the favourites."

Harry Kane believes England are ready to challenge

England head into the tournament with a squad featuring established leaders alongside players reaching their peak years. Kane highlighted the development under Tuchel and believes recent camps have helped establish standards within the group.

“We’ve been building together as a team over the past few camps under Thomas. I think we’ve set the standard, and now we look forward to continuing this into the World Cup next month.” — Harry Kane

Having followed England closely through recent international tournaments, one consistent feature has been their ability to progress deep into competitions. Reaching the latter stages has become expectation rather than surprise.

However, tournament football often turns on narrow moments and small margins, so previous progress alone offers no guarantees.

Kane says he is playing the best football of his career

The England captain will travel to the World Cup after a remarkable season with Bayern Munich, where he scored 58 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions.

Ten years after winning his first Premier League Golden Boot, Kane believes his overall game has evolved significantly beyond goalscoring.

Kane explained that his development into a deeper, more complete forward has transformed the way he approaches matches.

“My understanding of the game and my positioning have reached a completely different level. I feel like a much more complete footballer. And honestly, I think I am playing the best football of my career right now.” — Harry Kane

What's next

England's focus now turns fully towards North America and the start of their World Cup campaign. Tuchel's challenge will be turning an exceptionally talented squad into a tournament-winning side.

For Kane personally, there is also another target within reach. Three more World Cup goals would move him beyond Gary Lineker as England's leading scorer in the competition's history. More importantly for the captain, those goals could also help deliver the trophy English supporters have waited for since 1966.

Can Harry Kane finally lead England to World Cup glory this summer?
