Granit Xhaka Chelsea transfer stalls after Sunderland talks

Granit Xhaka’s Chelsea transfer appeared to be gathering momentum only days ago. Now Sunderland are increasingly confident their captain will stay.

Chelsea’s unexpected move for the midfielder created immediate concern on Wearside, particularly after it became clear that Xhaka was attracted by the possibility of reuniting with Xabi Alonso. The pair previously worked together at Bayer Leverkusen, where Xhaka played a central role in the club’s Bundesliga title-winning campaign.

Yet the situation has shifted significantly. Sunderland rejected an opening £8 million bid and then held positive talks with Xhaka, who reaffirmed his commitment to the club and the prospect of leading them into Europe.

Chelsea have not necessarily abandoned hope. But as things stand, Sunderland have emerged from a dramatic week in a far stronger position than many expected.

Sunderland’s response to Chelsea was immediate. Xhaka was not for sale, and £8m was nowhere near enough to change that position.

That stance was not simply an emotional reaction to potentially losing the club captain. Replacing what Xhaka provides would be extremely difficult and potentially far more expensive than the fee Chelsea were prepared to offer.

His value extends beyond one area of the pitch. Xhaka combines defensive work with elite creative passing, while his leadership has helped raise standards throughout the club. Finding another midfielder capable of reproducing that combination would be a major challenge.

Opta’s player comparisons underline the problem. Jon Gorrotxategi, Nemanja Matic, Vitaly Janelt and Sergi Altimira have been identified as the closest stylistic alternatives, yet none fully replicate Xhaka’s creative output.

The financial picture is equally important. Altimira recently moved to Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth more than £15m, while several possible alternatives would cost considerably more than Chelsea’s opening offer for Xhaka.

Selling the Swiss international for a relatively modest fee would therefore leave Sunderland needing to spend heavily on a replacement while also losing one of the most influential figures in the dressing room.

For a club preparing for European football, that calculation made little sense.

The more important development came away from the negotiating table.

Chelsea’s chances depended on one of two things happening: either they would have to increase their offer dramatically, or Xhaka would need to push hard for an exit.

Sunderland now believe the second scenario is unlikely.

The 33-year-old has held positive discussions with the club and indicated that he remains motivated by the project on Wearside. He is understood to be enthusiastic about leading Sunderland into Europe and continuing the relationship he has built with the supporters.

That does not erase his interest in Chelsea. The opportunity to work with Alonso again clearly appealed to him, and Chelsea retain some belief that the transfer could still be revived.

However, Xhaka has not submitted a transfer request, refused to train or attempted to force Sunderland into negotiations. That distinction has allowed the club to maintain control of the situation.

Having followed Sunderland’s progress over the past season, the importance of that should not be underestimated. Xhaka’s influence has never been limited to his performances. He has become a central figure in the standards and expectations surrounding the squad.

If Sunderland are satisfied that he is fully committed again, they have little incentive to weaken their position.

Chelsea had been expected to return with an improved offer, but any second bid was understood to represent only a relatively small increase on the initial £8m proposal.

That is unlikely to change Sunderland’s stance.

While every player ultimately has a price, the level required to make a Xhaka sale worthwhile would need to reflect both the cost of replacing him and the damage his departure could cause to the wider project.

Chelsea must therefore decide whether their interest is strong enough to make a much more aggressive offer.

A poor pre-season or another intervention from Alonso could alter the situation, and football transfers can change quickly. Sunderland, though, continue to insist that their position will not soften.

There is also a longer-term financial argument for keeping Xhaka. His transfer value is likely to decline as he gets older, but Sunderland appear willing to accept that in return for another season of his influence on and off the pitch.

The club will have to sell important players at times. This week has shown that they do not intend to do so cheaply or simply because a bigger club has shown interest.

The final question is whether the events of the past week have changed anything inside the dressing room.

Xhaka is an intense personality and has never been the easiest player to manage. Sunderland, however, view that edge as part of what makes him so valuable. His demands have helped lift standards and reinforce the belief that the club can continue progressing.

Florent Ghisolfi and Régis Le Bris place considerable importance on unity behind the scenes. If they believed Xhaka was now distracted or determined to leave, keeping him against his wishes would carry its own risks.

Their confidence suggests otherwise.

Nothing about the transfer market is definitive, and Chelsea could yet return with an offer that forces another conversation. However, it remains too early to assume the saga is over completely.

For now, the balance has changed. Sunderland have rejected Chelsea’s opening move, Xhaka has reaffirmed his commitment and the pressure is firmly on the London club to decide how far they are prepared to go.

Chelsea must decide whether to make a substantially improved bid or move on to another midfield target. A minor increase is unlikely to interest Sunderland, whose position has been strengthened by Xhaka’s decision not to force an exit.

The situation could change if Alonso makes another strong push or Chelsea reconsider how much they are willing to spend. As it stands, however, Sunderland expect Xhaka to remain and lead them into their European campaign.
