Roma make first move for Givairo Read after Nottingham Forest withdraw

AS Roma have entered the race to sign Feyenoord right-back Givairo Read after submitting an opening bid for the highly-rated defender, according to FR12.

The Serie A club have moved quickly after Nottingham Forest's pursuit stalled, with reports suggesting Roma's proposal exceeds the highest offer previously rejected by Feyenoord. Although the exact value of the bid has not been disclosed, it is understood to represent the strongest approach the Rotterdam club have received so far this summer.

Feyenoord, however, remain determined to keep the 20-year-old and continue to view him as an important part of their plans for the upcoming season.

Roma's interest comes after Nottingham Forest failed to reach an agreement despite making three separate bids for the Dutch defender.

The Premier League club had reportedly agreed personal terms with Read on a contract running until 2031, but negotiations with Feyenoord never reached a breakthrough.

With Forest now believed to have switched their attention to alternative targets, Roma have seized the opportunity to launch their own pursuit.

The Italian side are optimistic that Read would be interested in a move to the Stadio Olimpico, setting up what could become one of Feyenoord's biggest transfer decisions before the window closes.

Despite receiving serious interest from abroad, Feyenoord are not actively looking to sell one of their most promising academy graduates.

The Eredivisie club are understood to value Read at a minimum of €30 million, a figure that previously proved too high for Nottingham Forest.

Roma will therefore need to convince Feyenoord to lower their demands or improve their opening proposal if they are to complete a deal.

With Read under contract and regarded as a key player, the Dutch club remain in a strong negotiating position.

Although Read's development was interrupted by injuries last season, interest from across Europe has remained strong.

The right-back made just 16 Eredivisie appearances after several fitness setbacks limited his involvement, yet his long-term potential continues to attract leading clubs.

Bayern Munich and Newcastle United were both linked with Read during the January transfer window before injury concerns prevented either club from advancing their interest.

That sustained attention underlines the reputation Read has built despite his limited playing time over the past year.

Feyenoord will now assess Roma's opening proposal while deciding whether it comes close to the club's valuation. If the bid is rejected, the Italian side are expected to consider an improved offer as they attempt to beat other interested clubs to Read's signature before the transfer window closes.
