Gary Neville predicts Man Utd midfield change that could impact Bruno Fernandes

Gary Neville believes Manchester United may eventually be forced to switch to a three-man midfield, potentially pushing Bruno Fernandes away from his preferred No.10 position.

United have won only one of their opening three Premier League games under Michael Carrick, with defensive problems already emerging. Despite the difficult start, Fernandes has remained influential, scoring three goals.

Carrick significantly strengthened his midfield during the summer transfer window, bringing in Carlos Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Kobbie Mainoo also remains an important part of United’s long-term plans.

With so many midfield options available, Neville believes Carrick may ultimately need to change his system.

Speaking on the Big Game Preview, Neville suggested United could sacrifice one of their four attacking players and introduce another central midfielder.

“The only thing I can see happening eventually is that we'll have to drop one of that front four and play three in midfield,” Neville said.

He suggested a potential combination of Tielemans, Baleba and Mainoo.

However, that could leave Fernandes without his preferred central attacking position.

“That means sometimes Bruno has to go to the side, which isn't ideal because I think he's better in that number ten spot,” Neville explained.

United have conceded twice in each of their opening three Premier League matches, leaving Neville concerned about their ability to compete for Champions League qualification.

The club have not made a major investment in their defence during the last two summer windows, meaning Carrick could instead look towards his midfield for greater protection.

Baleba, in particular, could provide additional physical presence and defensive security if United move towards a three-man midfield.

The obvious compromise would be Fernandes. The Portuguese international remains United’s primary creative influence, but could occasionally have to operate from a wider position to accommodate the extra midfielder.

Ahead of the Manchester derby, Neville also suggested that Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez currently represent United’s strongest defensive combination.

Carrick must find a balance between accommodating United’s midfield options and keeping Fernandes in his most influential position. Sunday’s Manchester derby could provide another major indication of whether defensive concerns will force a tactical change.
