Fulham handed fresh Tiago Gabriel transfer warning after summer move collapsed

Fulham could face stronger competition and a significantly higher asking price if they revive their interest in Lecce defender Tiago Gabriel.

Álvaro Arbeloa's side explored a late move for the centre-back during the summer transfer window, when Crystal Palace and AC Milan were also linked with the player. Fulham were simultaneously considering Milan defender Fikayo Tomori but ultimately signed neither.

According to Tuttosport, Gabriel's agent Jorge Mendes has now discussed the defender with Juventus, potentially adding another interested club to the race.

Mendes recently held talks with Juventus, primarily concerning Francisco Conceição's contract situation, but Gabriel was reportedly another subject discussed during the meeting.

That could complicate matters for Fulham.

The Cottagers reportedly stepped away from negotiations during the summer because Lecce valued Gabriel at around €25million. His position has strengthened since then after signing a new contract with the Serie A club.

That renewal means Lecce are under less immediate pressure to sell and could demand considerably more if interest continues growing.

Juventus are now monitoring the situation, although Tuttosport suggests the Italian giants would prefer either a loan arrangement or another financially favourable deal.

Fulham's advantage could be their greater financial flexibility.

Lecce have established a reputation for developing players before selling them for substantial profits, and Gabriel could eventually become another valuable departure.

The summer interest also demonstrated that Fulham already view the defender as someone capable of strengthening Arbeloa's squad.

However, waiting has potentially made the operation more expensive.

With Gabriel now protected by a new contract and Mendes continuing to present opportunities around Europe, Fulham may have to decide whether their interest is strong enough to justify returning with an improved proposal.

Juventus are now another club to watch as Mendes continues working on Gabriel's future, although their preference for a cheaper structure could become an obstacle.

Fulham already know the player and have the financial capacity to return. The question is whether they remain interested enough to meet a valuation that could now exceed the €25m discussed during the summer.
