Fulham's search for Marco Silva's successor appears to be entering a decisive phase after Tony Khan revealed the club have narrowed their options to two leading candidates.

The Cottagers have been without a permanent manager since Silva left Craven Cottage at the beginning of June following the expiry of his contract. Since then, a number of names have been linked with the vacancy, including former Real Madrid interim coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

However, Khan has now provided the clearest indication yet of where the recruitment process stands, confirming that two candidates have already met with the Fulham board on multiple occasions.

Tony Khan provides update on Fulham's manager hunt

Speaking to the club's in-house media, Fulham's vice-chairman and director of football operations admitted Silva's departure had not been expected and explained why the search remains ongoing.

"The expectation here for a while was that Marco was going to stay," Khan said.

"We have to bring in a new coach, it's something we're working on and we've been actively talking and working to find someone to come in."

Khan also suggested that speculation surrounding the vacancy has often missed the mark, revealing that some individuals reported to be leading candidates had never even spoken to the club.

"I have seen a lot of the press," he continued.

"There's been people who we've been linked to where it says they were the frontrunner or that there was conversations, that were people we've never talked to or never even had a conversation about.

"At the same time, we have had lots of conversations, meetings. We've been actively talking."

Arbeloa link remains unclear

One of the strongest names linked with the role in recent weeks has been former Real Madrid interim boss Arbeloa, with reports suggesting he was closing in on the position.

Khan neither confirmed nor dismissed those claims, instead reiterating that multiple candidates remain under consideration.

"In particular, there are two candidates that have met with the board several times and we have a few candidates that we've had good conversations with."

That statement leaves the identity of the frontrunners unclear, although it does indicate that Fulham are moving closer to making a final decision.

Fulham's progress under Silva in recent seasons, the importance of this appointment should not be underestimated. The Portuguese coach established the club as a stable Premier League side, and his successor will inherit expectations of pushing further up the table rather than simply avoiding relegation.

However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions about who will ultimately be chosen.

Transfer plans on hold until appointment

Khan also confirmed that Fulham's transfer strategy will largely depend on the identity of the new head coach.

While recruitment discussions are continuing behind the scenes, the club want their next manager to have significant input regarding squad planning and potential signings.

"It's very important to make the hire for who's going to be the head coach before we figure out who comes in for potential transfers," Khan explained.

"It's important to talk with these candidates about their expectations and what we think of the squad, and what they think of the squad and then take their feedback and ideas and then incorporate that into the window."
