Ricardo Pepi transfer to Fulham didn’t fall apart for just one reason, with fresh details suggesting the player himself may now be a major hurdle ahead of the summer window.

Fulham had pushed hard to land the PSV striker this year and even looked close to getting it done. A deal worth around €40 million was agreed in principle in March, and Pepi had already travelled to London for medical checks before returning to the Netherlands.

But despite all that progress, the move never crossed the line.

Ricardo Pepi Fulham transfer hit by multiple issues

One sticking point was between the clubs.

Fulham wanted protection in the deal, specifically a clause that would allow them to pull out if Pepi picked up a serious injury before the end of the season. PSV refused to accept those terms, and that was enough to stall everything.

However, that wasn’t the only problem.

According to De Telegraaf journalist Jeroen Kapteijns, there were also complications on the player’s side during discussions with Fulham.

“There were some issues between Pepi and Fulham that weren’t going so well… whether Pepi would even want to go that route anymore, I don’t know.” — Jeroen Kapteijns

That adds another layer to a deal that already looked fragile.

PSV frustration as deal collapse delays plans

From PSV’s perspective, the collapse was a missed opportunity.

The Dutch club had been expecting a major cash injection from the sale, money they were ready to reinvest straight away. Without it, their transfer plans have been pushed back.

“They thought it was a real shame the deal fell through… they could have moved quickly with other plans.” — Jeroen Kapteijns

PSV are now likely to revisit the situation in the summer, but the timing will be different, and possibly the conditions too.

Key Insights

  • Fulham had agreed a €40m deal with PSV for Ricardo Pepi
  • The move collapsed due to disagreements over contract terms
  • New reports suggest issues also existed between Pepi and Fulham
  • PSV were frustrated as the sale would have funded other moves
  • A summer transfer is still possible but now more complicated

What’s next for Ricardo Pepi?

Fulham could return in the summer, but they will need to resolve more than just the fee. Convincing the player may now be just as important as negotiating with PSV.

PSV, meanwhile, are likely to remain open to a sale if the right offer arrives again. The situation will depend on whether all parties are willing to revisit talks after the earlier breakdown.
