PSG interest in Enzo Fernández complicated by reputation concerns

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has emerged as a potential target for Paris Saint-Germain, but reports in France suggest any future move could be undermined by concerns surrounding his behaviour.

According to L’Equipe, PSG have placed Fernández on a list of midfielders they are monitoring as they plan ahead for future windows. The Argentina international remains under contract at Chelsea until 2032, but recent developments at Stamford Bridge have prompted discussion about his long-term outlook.

Fernández arrived in Europe when Benfica signed him from River Plate in June 2022. Just months later, Chelsea paid more than €120m to secure his signature in January 2023, making him one of the most expensive signings in football history.

Former teammate Álex Grimaldo later admitted that Fernández’s departure “killed” Benfica, underlining the impact he made during his brief stay in Lisbon. That influence has largely carried over to west London.

Fernández has been a consistent presence for Chelsea and Argentina, playing a key role in the Blues’ UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup triumphs last year. This season, operating primarily as a central midfielder, the 24-year-old has recorded eight goals and three assists across 30 appearances.

Much of that form came under Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea earlier this month. His replacement, Liam Rosenior, oversaw a defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday, a result that has added to the sense of transition at the club.

L’Equipe claim Fernández had developed a strong working relationship with Maresca and that the managerial change has unsettled him. As a result, the midfielder is said to be considering his future, even though Chelsea remain in a strong contractual position.

PSG are described as attentive observers rather than active suitors at this stage. The French champions are not expected to make a move during the winter window but are prepared to reassess the situation if uncertainty around Fernández continues.

However, the report also highlights a significant obstacle. In France, Fernández’s reputation has been damaged following a video that circulated after the World Cup, in which he and others were seen singing derogatory songs about the France squad.

The incident was widely criticised, not only for its tone but also for referencing the African heritage of several French players, which led to accusations of racist behaviour. L’Equipe describe this episode as having “tarnished” Fernández’s reputation in France — a factor that could complicate any future move to Ligue 1.

From Chelsea’s perspective, Fernández remains a core asset. His long-term contract gives the club control, and there is no suggestion they are actively looking to sell. Any approach from PSG would therefore need to overcome not just a significant financial barrier, but also the reputational context outlined in France.

For now, PSG’s interest appears cautious and long-term. Much will depend on how Fernández settles under Rosenior and whether Chelsea can quickly restore stability. Until then, any transfer talk remains speculative — and complicated.
