Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad announcement is now just weeks away, with the Three Lions boss entering the final stage of one of the toughest selection calls in international football.

With the 2026 World Cup beginning on 11 June and England opening their group campaign against Croatia on 17 June, Tuchel must now narrow a deep pool of talent into just 26 names.

And with form, fitness and club commitments still in play, the final squad remains far from settled.

England head into the tournament hoping to end a 60-year wait for a major men’s trophy — and every selection will be scrutinised.

When will England announce their World Cup 2026 squad?

England, like all nations competing at the World Cup, must first submit a preliminary squad list to FIFA by 11 May.

That list can include between 35 and 55 players and does not have to be made public.

The final 26-man squad must then be submitted by 30 May, which is expected to be the date Tuchel officially confirms his travelling group.

Before England’s opening game against Croatia, Tuchel will also use two warm-up friendlies — against New Zealand on 6 June and Costa Rica on 10 June — to finalise sharpness and tactical balance.

Those games could be vital for fringe players.

Which players are almost certain to make England’s World Cup squad?

Some names already feel locked in. Harry Kane remains the captain and automatic starter, while Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are central to Tuchel’s midfield plans.

In defence, Marc Guéhi and John Stones look likely, while Jordan Pickford remains the leading goalkeeper.

Bukayo Saka is also expected to be a guaranteed inclusion if fit.

Beyond them, players like Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Morgan Rogers and Ezri Konsa have strengthened their positions significantly.

Who is still fighting for a place?

This is where it gets complicated. Phil Foden remains one of the biggest talking points.

His quality is unquestionable, but his reduced role at Manchester City has raised genuine doubts over his place. That would have felt impossible to imagine a year ago.

Cole Palmer also enters the squad conversation under slightly more pressure than expected after an inconsistent Chelsea season, even if his inclusion still feels likely.

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford has rebuilt momentum during his loan spell at Barcelona and looks increasingly likely to return.

Kobbie Mainoo has also played his way back into serious contention after impressing under difficult circumstances at Manchester United.

The biggest battle: Harry Kane’s backup

The most unpredictable position may be backup striker. Tuchel’s system is built around Kane, but tournament football demands alternatives.

That leaves a battle between Ollie Watkins, Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Each offers something different. Watkins brings movement and pace. Solanke offers hold-up play and pressing. Calvert-Lewin brings aerial threat and physicality.

Much will depend on form over the final few weeks.

However, it remains too early for certainty.

Injuries, European finals and final league matches could still change everything.

What’s next?
