Inter Milan have reportedly revived their interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez as they prepare for life after Yann Sommer.

The Argentina international has been linked with the Nerazzurri before, but fresh reports from Italy suggest his name has once again moved onto the club's shortlist following Sommer's departure.

While Inter's goalkeeping plans have evolved in recent weeks, Martínez remains a player admired by the Serie A champions.

Martínez back on Inter radar

According to reports in Italy, conversations have already taken place between Inter and Aston Villa regarding the World Cup-winning goalkeeper.

The Birmingham club are not believed to have completely ruled out a sale, although any deal would still be far from straightforward.

Martínez remains under contract at Villa Park until 2029 and continues to be one of the club's most important players following their Europa League-winning campaign.

His future, however, has been the subject of speculation for more than a year.

Last summer, moves to Manchester United and Saudi Arabia were discussed but ultimately failed to materialise, resulting in the Argentine remaining at Aston Villa.

Aston Villa's valuation revealed

One of the major obstacles facing Inter is the financial aspect of the deal.

Reports suggest Aston Villa would demand around €20 million to part ways with the 33-year-old goalkeeper.

For a player of Martínez's quality and experience, that valuation is not excessive, but it may not align with Inter's current thinking.

The Italian champions have recently adjusted their plans for the goalkeeping department.

Change in Inter strategy

Earlier in the year, Inter were believed to be searching for an established first-choice goalkeeper, with Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario among the names linked.

However, the latest reports indicate the club are now considering promoting Josep Martínez to the number one role.

That shift would dramatically alter the profile of goalkeeper Inter are targeting.

Instead of spending heavily on a new starter, the Nerazzurri may now prioritise an experienced backup capable of mentoring the Spaniard while remaining reliable when called upon.

Martínez may not fit revised plan

While Martínez undoubtedly offers leadership, experience and elite-level quality, convincing him to accept a secondary role would appear highly unlikely.

The Argentine remains the undisputed number one for his country and is still performing at the highest level.

A move to Inter would only make sense if he were guaranteed a starting position.

That is why some observers believe the transfer may be difficult despite the mutual admiration between club and player.
