Manchester United have reportedly reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Brazilian midfielder Ederson, with the deal expected to become one of the club's first major signings of the summer.

According to reports from David Ornstein, United have agreed a package worth €40.5 million plus €4.5 million in potential bonuses for the Atalanta star. Personal terms have already been settled, and the midfielder is expected to sign a four-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

While the move is not expected to be formally completed until early July, all parties are reportedly confident the transfer will be finalised.

Manchester United secure key midfield target

United have prioritised midfield reinforcements ahead of the new season, and Ederson has emerged as one of their most important targets.

The 26-year-old has developed into one of Serie A's most complete midfielders during his time with Atalanta, earning widespread praise for his athleticism, ball-carrying ability and defensive work rate.

His arrival would represent another significant step in Manchester United's ongoing squad rebuild under Michael Carrick.

Having followed United's resurgence during the second half of last season, midfield became one of the areas most clearly identified for improvement despite the emergence of several promising options already within the squad.

Why Ederson fits Carrick’s plans

One of the biggest positives for United is Ederson’s versatility.

The Brazilian can operate as a defensive midfielder, box-to-box midfielder or in a more advanced role when required. That flexibility could prove invaluable as Carrick continues shaping his preferred midfield structure.

The move also arrives at an important time for Kobbie Mainoo.

After initially struggling for regular opportunities earlier in the campaign, the England international became a central figure under Carrick and established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Many inside Old Trafford will hope Ederson can form a long-term partnership alongside Mainoo.

More midfield additions could follow

Ederson may not be the final midfield arrival at Old Trafford this summer.

The club continue to monitor several high-profile targets as uncertainty remains over the futures of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte. Should either depart, United are expected to intensify efforts to add further experience and quality.

Reports have linked Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson with a move, while Real Madrid's Aurélien Tchouaméni has also been mentioned among the club's long-term ambitions.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali continues to be discussed in transfer circles, although any deal would likely require a substantial financial commitment.

United are also exploring younger and more affordable options, including Middlesbrough's Hayden Hackney and Southampton's Shea Charles.

What Ederson could bring to Manchester United

Ederson's profile addresses several areas United have sought to improve.

His ability to recover possession, drive through midfield and contribute physically on and off the ball should complement Mainoo's technical strengths. That balance has become increasingly important as Carrick looks to build a more dynamic and aggressive midfield unit.

However, it remains too early to judge the success of the signing before he has adapted to Premier League football. Serie A and English football present different challenges, and United supporters will expect immediate impact given the scale of the club's ambitions.

What is clear is that Ederson appears set to become a major part of Carrick's plans moving forward.

Key Points

  • Manchester United have agreed a deal worth up to £38.8m for Ederson.
  • Personal terms are already in place.
  • The Brazilian will sign a four-year contract with an optional extra year.
  • The transfer is expected to be completed in early July.
  • United remain interested in further midfield additions this summer.

What’s Next?

The next stage will be Ederson's medical and the completion of final paperwork before the transfer is officially announced. Attention will then shift to United's wider midfield rebuild and whether further departures create room for additional signings.

With Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte both facing uncertain futures, recruitment activity in midfield may continue throughout the window. Ederson could be the first piece of a much larger overhaul as Carrick prepares his squad for the 2026/27 campaign.

Is Ederson the ideal partner for Kobbie Mainoo, or should Manchester United still pursue another marquee midfield signing this summer?
