Eddie Howe has made his strongest demand yet to Newcastle United’s owners, insisting the club must move quickly to appoint a new sporting director following the departure of Paul Mitchell.

The Magpies endured a turbulent summer, fighting off Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) pressure and missing out on several top targets. Despite landing six new signings — including Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa — Howe believes Newcastle fell short of their ambitions in the market.

With David Hopkinson installed as the new CEO, the manager has wasted little time in telling PIF that recruitment must be reshaped before the January window. Without a director in place, negotiations were left to head of recruitment Steve Nickson and assistant manager Andy Howe, a structure Howe feels is unsustainable.

Howe: “I’m Desperate for a Sporting Director”

“I don’t know where that’s come from. I’m desperate for a sporting director. We need that person, his expertise, it is a never-ending network. I had a very good relationship with Dan Ashworth, a very good relationship with Richard Hughes at Bournemouth. We need the right man and we need the position filled.” — Eddie Howe

Howe’s comments directly address speculation that he prefers to work without a recruitment chief. Instead, the Newcastle boss made clear he wants the club to move fast in securing the right candidate.

Ross Wilson Tipped to Join

Reports suggest that Ross Wilson, currently at Nottingham Forest, is the frontrunner for the role. An agreement between the clubs is thought to be close, though neither side has confirmed the deal.

Wilson’s appointment would come at a crucial time. With Champions League football back at St James’ Park and Premier League rivals strengthening around them, Newcastle cannot afford another transfer window of uncertainty.

Paul Mitchell’s Short Spell

Paul Mitchell’s stint on Tyneside lasted just 12 months. Despite his strong reputation in Europe, he struggled with PSR restrictions and clashed with Howe behind the scenes.

Mitchell did oversee the arrivals of young talents Antonio Cordero, Kyle Fitzgerald and Baran Yildiz, while negotiating the profitable sale of Lloyd Kelly to Juventus. However, his relationship with Howe reportedly soured, with suggestions the manager felt undermined by his influence.

Howe’s latest remarks pointedly praised Ashworth and Hughes, but omitted any mention of Mitchell — a detail many supporters see as telling.

Howe will welcome the squad depth gained but is aware that Newcastle must improve efficiency in the market to compete with England’s elite.

Analyst Verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William believes Howe’s “desperation” is less about power and more about pragmatism.

“Newcastle’s ownership model is ambitious, but the lack of a sporting director last summer left them vulnerable in negotiations. Howe understands the Premier League is unforgiving — missing out on first-choice targets while rivals strengthen can quickly undermine progress.

Ross Wilson, if appointed, would give Newcastle the organisational backbone they lacked. It would also free Howe to focus purely on coaching, rather than firefighting during transfer talks.”

Key Insights

  • Eddie Howe urges PIF to appoint a new sporting director quickly.
  • Newcastle missed out on Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike in summer.
  • Ross Wilson expected to leave Nottingham Forest for St James’ Park.
  • Paul Mitchell’s short reign ended in tension with Howe.
  • Champions League return adds pressure to recruit well in January.

What’s Next for Newcastle?

The Magpies’ priority is finalising a sporting director before the January transfer window. If Ross Wilson’s move from Nottingham Forest goes through, he will be tasked with aligning recruitment with Howe’s tactical vision.

Meanwhile, Newcastle face a demanding run of fixtures domestically and in Europe. Their ability to compete on both fronts could hinge on January reinforcements, especially if injuries hit key positions.
