Manchester United defender Diego León could leave Old Trafford before the transfer deadline, with his agent admitting the youngster’s immediate future remains uncertain.
The 19-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for United and could be allowed to leave on loan if the right opportunity emerges during the final days of the window.
León’s agent admits future is unclear
Agent Renato Bittar has confirmed Manchester United are yet to make a final decision regarding León.
“He’s in a growth phase, his body is handling the training load very well,” Bittar said.
“His future is still unclear, the club hasn’t asked us to let him go. We’ll see if anything comes up this week.”
That leaves the possibility of a late departure open, although United have not actively instructed León’s representatives to find him another club.
A loan move appears the most realistic scenario should United decide the Paraguayan needs regular senior football elsewhere.
First-team breakthrough yet to arrive
León joined Manchester United from Cerro Porteño last summer but struggled to break into the senior setup under Ruben Amorim.
Michael Carrick has also yet to hand the defender his competitive first-team debut.
Instead, León made 20 appearances for United’s Under-21 side last season, continuing his development away from the senior spotlight.
There was interest from OGC Nice over a possible loan in January, although his agent insisted at the time that León would remain in Manchester.
The youngster himself has previously made clear that his long-term ambition is to succeed at Old Trafford.
Balde pursuit could influence decision
United’s late transfer plans could have a major impact on León.
Luke Shaw remains Carrick’s first-choice left-back, while Harry Amass is another recognised option. Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu can also operate on the left.
United are additionally considering a move for Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde, preferably on loan.
With uncertainty also surrounding Amass, Carrick and United’s recruitment staff may wait until their left-back situation becomes clearer before sanctioning León’s departure.
Key Points
- Diego León’s agent says the defender’s Manchester United future is “still unclear”.
- United have not instructed the 19-year-old to find another club.
- León is yet to make his competitive first-team debut after playing 20 times for the U21s last season.
- A loan departure appears the most likely option if United sanction an exit.
- United’s pursuit of Alejandro Balde could influence the final decision.
What’s Next?
Manchester United are expected to make a decision on León before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Much could depend on their other left-back business. If Alejandro Balde arrives and United retain their existing options, a loan could give León the regular senior football he currently lacks.
For now, his representatives are waiting to see whether an opportunity emerges during the final days of the window.
