David Moyes backed to drive Everton forward as former midfielder outlines ambitions

David Moyes has been backed to provide the stability Everton need while laying the foundations for another push towards European qualification.

Former Toffees midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger believes Moyes' leadership and experience will once again prove decisive as Everton prepare for the new Premier League campaign.

Speaking to VfB Stuttgart's official website ahead of the clubs' pre-season meeting this weekend, Hitzlsperger praised the Everton manager and insisted the Scot's track record speaks for itself.

Although reluctant to predict how Everton's season will unfold while the transfer window remains open, Hitzlsperger believes Moyes guarantees a competitive and well-organised side.

"I'm holding back on making a prediction because the transfer window is still open for a long time and a lot can still happen," he said.

"Fundamentally, though, manager David Moyes will ensure stability and make sure the fundamental virtues of the game are upheld.

"He has proven this over so many years at various clubs. That means the style of play will be physical and robust. It will be a good test for both sides."

Hitzlsperger played under Moyes during a brief spell at Goodison Park before retiring in 2012, having also enjoyed a successful career with Stuttgart.

The former Germany international believes Moyes' greatest strength lies not in tactical innovation but in the mentality and organisation he instils within his squads.

"He is defined by his attitude rather than by philosophising about tactics," Hitzlsperger explained.

"His teams defend well, are well organised and possess the physical attributes to hold their own.

"Whether they ultimately play a 4-4-2, a 4-2-3-1 or another system isn't the most crucial thing.

"He places great importance on leadership, yet he still keeps pace with the times regarding tactical developments."

Hitzlsperger also believes Everton's long-term ambitions extend well beyond simply securing another season in the Premier League.

With the club now benefiting from the financial opportunities provided by their new stadium, he expects expectations to continue rising under Moyes.

"The new stadium was a huge step forward financially," he added.

"Now the challenge is to translate those heightened expectations into sporting success.

"David Moyes isn't the type to just tread water; he always sets ambitious goals. So they'll certainly be aiming high and hoping, if things go well, to play in Europe again."

Everton continue their preparations for the new campaign with a pre-season fixture against Stuttgart, offering Moyes another opportunity to fine-tune his squad before competitive football returns.

With the transfer window still open, the Toffees could yet strengthen further, but Hitzlsperger believes the club already possess the leadership required to build another competitive Premier League campaign.
