Darío Osorio impresses for Chile despite defeat to United States

Crystal Palace winger Darío Osorio believes Chile deserved more from their 4-2 defeat to the United States after producing an encouraging individual performance on his return to international action.

The 22-year-old was among Chile’s standout performers in St. Louis and came close to scoring when one of his first-half efforts struck the post.

Chile created several opportunities before the break but failed to make enough of them, something Osorio believes ultimately proved costly.

“It leaves a sad feeling. We deserved a little more,” Osorio told CNN Chile. “The result doesn’t really reflect what we saw in the match.”

Despite the defeat, Osorio felt Chile had taken a step forward compared with their previous performance against Canada.

“We saw an improvement, but we have to keep working,” he said. “We’re a little more satisfied, but we’re not happy.”

Chile had opportunities to put themselves in a considerably stronger position during the first half, including two efforts which struck the woodwork.

Osorio was responsible for one of them.

“In the first half we needed to be more clinical with our finishing,” the Palace winger explained. “We hit the post twice and had chances that the goalkeeper saved.”

“We could have put ourselves in a stronger position there.”

While the scoreline was disappointing, Osorio’s individual display provided another positive sign following his move to Crystal Palace.

His direct attacking threat was evident and he was repeatedly involved as Chile attempted to cause problems for the United States.

Osorio was also asked about manager Nicolás Córdova and his relationship with the Chile squad.

Rather than focusing on his own conversations with the coach, he stressed the collective confidence within the group and their longer-term objective.

“We’re good and we have the coach’s confidence,” Osorio said. “He tells us we’re building towards the qualifiers. We are all united behind that objective.”

That makes the United States defeat part of a wider rebuilding process for Chile rather than simply an isolated result.

For Palace, meanwhile, Osorio’s performance offers encouragement. He was unable to turn his best opportunity into a goal, but his display provided another indication of the attacking qualities he can bring at club level.

Osorio will look to carry the confidence from his international performance back to Crystal Palace once his involvement with Chile is complete.

Although the result against the United States was disappointing, his individual contribution provides encouragement for Palace as they continue integrating the winger.

For Chile, the emphasis remains on development ahead of the qualifiers. Osorio’s comments suggest Córdova retains the confidence of the squad, with improving their finishing one obvious area to address after creating opportunities without taking full advantage in St. Louis.
