Daniel Farke has strengthened his position as Leeds United manager after comfortably keeping the club in the Premier League, but former defender Matt Kilgallon believes no manager is ever completely safe at Elland Road.

Despite speculation earlier in the season that Leeds' ambitious owners could pursue a bigger-name coach, Farke retained the backing of both the dressing room and the board. Now, with the club aiming higher than survival, expectations are set to rise again.

Farke wins over Leeds hierarchy

Leeds finished their first season back in the Premier League eight points clear of the relegation zone, a campaign that convinced the club's hierarchy to continue with Farke.

According to Kilgallon, the turning point came during a difficult run of fixtures when Leeds refused to collapse under pressure.

"The chairman and the owners saw that the players were still really playing for him."

Rather than losing the dressing room, Leeds responded positively, with Farke's tactical changes helping the Whites remain competitive against some of the division's strongest teams.

Kilgallon believes that unity ultimately protected the German from any serious threat to his job.

"Three defeats and you're looking over your shoulder"

While Farke has earned plenty of credit, Kilgallon admits Premier League management leaves little room for complacency.

"You only need three losses and you are looking over your shoulder."

The former Leeds defender believes that reality becomes even greater now that the club's ambitions are changing.

With Elland Road undergoing expansion and investment continuing behind the scenes, simply avoiding relegation will no longer satisfy supporters or ownership.

Survival is no longer enough

Leeds' recruitment this summer reflects a club thinking beyond staying in the division.

The Whites have already strengthened key areas of the squad and are expected to remain active before the transfer window closes as they target another step forward.

Kilgallon believes a top-half finish should now become the objective.

"You can't be happy now with just staying up. It's got to be top 10, top 12 and keep building."

He also warned about the infamous second-season challenge that has caught out several promoted clubs in recent years.

For Leeds, avoiding that trap will be crucial if they want to establish themselves as a consistent Premier League side.

Key Points

  • Daniel Farke has retained the backing of Leeds United's owners.
  • Former defender Matt Kilgallon says the players remain fully behind the manager.
  • Kilgallon warned every Premier League manager is only "three losses" away from pressure.
  • Leeds are expanding Elland Road and increasing expectations.
  • A top-half finish is emerging as the club's next target.

What's next?

Farke's immediate focus will be preparing Leeds for the new Premier League campaign, while the club continue strengthening the squad during the transfer window. With expectations now higher than simply surviving, a positive start to the season could be vital in maintaining the momentum built over the past 12 months.

Can Daniel Farke take Leeds United into the Premier League's top half, or will the pressure grow if results dip early in the season?

DF has done an amazing job in the 3 seasons he has been here people forget the state the club was in when he arrived. With the right signings top 10 can be done.

Not a Leeds fan but I don’t think it’s the right manager to move on with. I don’t get why they didn’t look for someone else as a manager instead of sticking to him. He was very lucky to switch to a 343/352 tactics
