Crystal Palace have been handed a worrying double injury blow ahead of their historic Conference League final after both Chris Richards and Chadi Riad were forced off during the 2-2 draw against Brentford.
The Eagles twice held the lead at the Gtech Stadium through goals from Ismaila Sarr and Adam Wharton, only to be denied by Dango Ouattara's late equaliser.
However, the biggest concern for Oliver Glasner may have arrived away from the scoreline itself.
With the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano now just ten days away, Palace suddenly face uncertainty around two important defensive players.
Chris Richards and Chadi Riad concerns emerge
Richards entered the match during the second half but lasted only 29 minutes before being forced off.
The defender looked visibly distressed while receiving treatment and appeared emotional as he left the pitch.
Riad also failed to complete the game after suffering what appeared to be a problem involving his left leg, leaving Glasner needing further defensive adjustments.
Speaking after the match, the Palace manager offered an early update on Richards.
“Chris I think twisted his ankle.”
Glasner also suggested there was cautious optimism regarding the situation.
“It’s quite swollen so we have to assess it further, but hopefully he can return in the midweek.”
Richards absence would create major issue
Having followed Crystal Palace closely this season, Richards has been one of the most important figures throughout the campaign.
The defender has provided consistency and stability during one of Palace’s strongest seasons in recent history.
Riad’s circumstances are slightly different.
The defender spent long periods unavailable earlier in the season but has impressed since returning to action in January.
| Crystal Palace defenders (2025/26) | Record |
|---|---|
| Chris Richards appearances | 50 |
| Chadi Riad appearances | 12 |
| Conference League final date | 27 May |
| Time until final | 10 days |

Richards in particular has become a regular starter and losing him for a European final would significantly affect Palace’s preparations.
World Cup concerns could also emerge
Beyond Palace’s immediate issues, there may also be wider international implications.
Richards is expected to be part of the United States squad at the World Cup, while Riad is likely to feature for Morocco.
At this stage, however, there remains no indication regarding the severity of either injury.
From the final weeks of Palace’s season, maintaining squad fitness had become increasingly important with the club balancing league commitments alongside European competition.
The timing therefore feels particularly unfortunate.
However, it remains too early to conclude that either player will miss the final itself.
Palace still have one Premier League fixture remaining against Arsenal before attention shifts entirely toward Leipzig.
