Fikayo Tomori makes Coventry City wait despite talks with AC Milan

Coventry City have already spoken to AC Milan about signing Fikayo Tomori, but the defender is reportedly waiting to see whether more attractive offers arrive.

The newly promoted Premier League side have stepped forward for the 28-year-old as Frank Lampard looks to add top-flight experience to his squad.

According to Italian journalist Luca Cerchione, Coventry’s interest is concrete and discussions with Milan have taken place. However, Tomori is not currently convinced by the move.

Tomori endured an inconsistent 2025/26 campaign as Milan missed out on Champions League qualification.

Although Max Allegri continued to use the England international, the manager’s departure was followed by significant changes at San Siro.

Ruben Amorim is now rebuilding the squad and Tomori is reportedly no longer part of his plans. Milan are therefore prepared to sell the former Chelsea defender, whose contract expires in 2027.

Coventry have recognised an opportunity and made contact over a possible transfer.

The main obstacle is the player’s position.

Tomori is said to be waiting for other options before making a final decision on his future. At this stage of the window, he is not ready to accept a move to Coventry.

Coventry may have reason to remain patient.

If Tomori does not receive an offer he considers more attractive, his position could change later in the transfer window. That is where Lampard’s relationship with the defender may become important.

The pair previously worked together at Chelsea, and Lampard could attempt to convince Tomori of Coventry’s Premier League project.

For a newly promoted side, signing a defender with experience in England, Serie A and the Champions League would represent a major addition.

Milan’s own transfer plans could also accelerate the situation. Amorim is looking at alternative defensive options, with Sporting centre-back Gonçalo Inácio among the players linked with a move to San Siro.

Tomori’s current stance makes an immediate agreement unlikely, but Coventry do not necessarily need to abandon the move.

Milan have a clear reason to sell before the defender enters the final year of his contract, while Tomori may have fewer options once the market develops.

The longer he remains available, the more important Coventry’s concrete interest and Lampard connection could become.

However, much will depend on whether other Premier League or European clubs enter the race.

Coventry are likely to keep the door open rather than push for an immediate decision.

Tomori will wait for other opportunities, but his position could change if no preferred move emerges. Milan’s desire to sell and Lampard’s presence at Coventry mean the deal may become more realistic as the transfer deadline approaches.
