Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to hand Conor Gallagher his debut as early as this weekend, with the club moving quickly to finalise his arrival from Atletico Madrid.

Football Place understands the former Chelsea midfielder is due to arrive in England on Tuesday morning to undergo a medical and complete a £34.6million transfer to north London. Gallagher is believed to have agreed a five-and-a-half-year contract, with Spurs keen to have him available for Saturday’s Premier League clash against West Ham United.

Spurs accelerate deal after Bentancur setback

Tottenham’s urgency has been driven by injury. Rodrigo Bentancur is facing up to three months on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury in last week’s 3–2 defeat to Bournemouth, an issue that also ruled him out of Spurs’ FA Cup exit against Aston Villa.

With midfield depth suddenly stretched, Spurs reassessed their options and moved decisively for Gallagher, hijacking talks that had been progressing between Atletico and Villa. Gallagher had been open to a move to Villa Park, but Tottenham’s intervention quickly changed the picture.

Registration deadline key to West Ham debut

Provided there are no complications with his medical or paperwork, Gallagher is expected to train with his new team-mates for the first time on Wednesday. For him to be eligible to face West Ham on Saturday, Spurs must register the midfielder by the Premier League’s Friday 12pm deadline.

If that deadline is met, Thomas Frank would have the option to include Gallagher immediately, offering a timely boost ahead of a busy run of fixtures.

Should the London derby come too soon, Gallagher’s next opportunity to make his Tottenham debut would arrive against Burnley the following weekend.

Champions League registration limitation

One caveat is European eligibility. Gallagher cannot be registered for the Champions League until after the league phase has concluded, meaning his early involvement will be restricted to domestic competitions.

That reality places additional importance on league minutes, particularly as Spurs look to stabilise their midfield following Bentancur’s injury.

Why Gallagher wanted the move

Gallagher’s desire to leave Madrid has been driven by a lack of consistent game time. The England international has started just six matches across all competitions this season for Atletico, limiting his rhythm and visibility at international level.

A move to Tottenham is expected to significantly boost his chances of returning to the England set-up ahead of the World Cup this summer. Gallagher has previously acknowledged that regular minutes are central to his international ambitions.

“That’s one of my goals,” Gallagher said in late 2025. “I have spoken to Thomas Tuchel and he has told me what he needs from me and what I have to do to return to the team.”

Key insights

  • Tottenham want Gallagher registered in time to face West Ham
  • Friday’s 12pm deadline is crucial for debut eligibility
  • Bentancur’s injury accelerated Spurs’ move
  • Gallagher cannot play Champions League football yet
  • Regular minutes could revive his England prospects

What’s next for Tottenham?

Spurs will push to complete Gallagher’s registration by Friday, with training integration planned midweek. Whether his debut comes against West Ham or Burnley, the expectation is that Gallagher will play a significant role in the coming months as Tottenham navigate injuries and fixture congestion.

Should Tottenham start Conor Gallagher immediately — or ease him in gradually after his move from Madrid?
