Chelsea press for Pep Chavarria after €15m offer rejected

Chelsea are continuing to press for Pep Chavarria after Rayo Vallecano rejected a €15 million offer for the left-back.

The Blues have identified the 28-year-old as a target following Marc Cucurella's move to Real Madrid, with Xabi Alonso keen to bring the Spaniard to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have already tested Rayo's position with offers reportedly worth around €9 million and €15 million, but neither has been enough to secure an agreement.

The latest development is that negotiations remain active. Chavarria is reportedly keen on the move, while Rayo are preparing for the possibility that their first-choice left-back could leave Madrid this summer.

Chelsea have not been discouraged by Rayo's rejection of their previous bids.

According to reports in Spain, the Premier League club remain in negotiations as they attempt to find a fee that will convince Rayo to sell. The La Liga side have pointed to Chavarria's €50 million release clause and are under no contractual pressure because his current deal runs until 2030.

However, Rayo's position may not be completely inflexible. Spanish reports suggest an agreement with Chelsea remains possible if the financial terms are acceptable, while the club's search for another left-back adds further context to the negotiations.

Rayo manager Beñat San José is prioritising reinforcement in the position after Alfonso Espino's departure. Chavarria is now the only recognised senior left-back in the squad, meaning any sale would leave the club needing a replacement.

Alonso's interest is an important part of Chelsea's pursuit.

The Chelsea head coach is reportedly keen to add Chavarria to his squad as the club reshape their options on the left side of defence. The player is also believed to be open to moving to England, giving the Blues encouragement despite the gap between their offers and Rayo's valuation.

Chavarria would represent a different type of Chelsea signing from many of the younger players recruited in recent years. At 28, he would arrive with extensive La Liga experience and the ability to operate as both a left-back and wing-back.

His 2025/26 campaign also showed his durability. Chavarria played 3,519 minutes across 44 matches in all competitions, scoring once and providing four assists.

Those figures do not define his role. Chelsea's interest appears to be based more on his intensity, mobility and experience, qualities that could suit the demands Alonso places on his wide defenders.

Rayo have already demonstrated that they will not allow key players to leave cheaply.

The Spanish club rejected Chelsea's €15 million proposal and have highlighted a release clause worth €50 million. That does not necessarily mean Chelsea must pay the full amount, but it strengthens Rayo's negotiating position.

Chavarria is contracted until 2030 and is coming off one of the strongest seasons of his career. His current market value has been placed at around €10 million, although Rayo's stance shows they believe his importance to the team exceeds that figure.

Based on the recent developments around the deal, the key issue is no longer whether Chelsea are interested. It is whether the two clubs can bridge a substantial gap in valuation.

However, it remains too early to suggest a transfer is close. Chelsea are pressing and the player is reportedly receptive to the move, but Rayo have not yet accepted an offer.

Talks between Chelsea and Rayo Vallecano are expected to determine whether a compromise can be reached. The Spanish club's search for another left-back will also be worth watching, as securing a replacement could make Chavarria's departure easier to manage.

Chelsea have already made their intentions clear with multiple offers, while Alonso is pushing for the signing and the defender reportedly wants the move. The next decisive development will be whether the Blues improve their proposal enough to bring Rayo back to the negotiating table.
