Chelsea fall €35m short as Rayo Vallecano refuse to budge on Pep Chavarría transfer

Chelsea remain well short of Rayo Vallecano's valuation of Pep Chavarría after the Spanish club rejected an improved offer for the left-back, according to reports in Spain. With Marc Cucurella having departed earlier this summer, the Premier League side are searching for a replacement, but negotiations have quickly reached an impasse.

Spanish outlet AS reports that Chelsea have increased their proposal to €15 million, yet Rayo Vallecano continue to insist that only the defender's €50 million release clause will secure his departure.

Chelsea's interest in Chavarría has gathered pace over recent days after identifying the 28-year-old as one of their preferred options at left-back.

Earlier reports suggested an opening bid had already been rejected before the latest offer arrived. However, the improved proposal has done little to change Rayo Vallecano's position.

The La Liga club are understood to be refusing negotiations altogether, pointing to the release clause that was reaffirmed when Chavarría signed a contract extension until 2030.

Chelsea are reshaping their defence following Cucurella's move to Real Madrid and view Chavarría as a player capable of stepping into the role.

Reports in Spain also claim Xabi Alonso is a strong admirer of the defender and has identified him as the preferred replacement on the left side.

The Spaniard enjoyed another consistent campaign for Rayo Vallecano, combining defensive reliability with the attacking energy required from a modern full-back. Those qualities have attracted attention beyond Spain, although Rayo's stance suggests they are under no financial pressure to sell.

However, it remains too early to conclude whether Chelsea will significantly improve their offer or move on to alternative targets.

Rayo Vallecano's firm negotiating stance is not without precedent.

Last summer, Wolves attempted to sign Andrei Rațiu with an offer worth €18 million. Rayo rejected the proposal immediately and insisted that only the Romanian international's €25 million release clause would be accepted.

No compromise was reached, and the transfer eventually collapsed.

That previous case strengthens the belief that Rayo are prepared to walk away from negotiations unless buying clubs activate the agreed clause in full.

Chelsea must now decide whether to substantially increase their bid or explore alternative left-back options as preparations for the new season continue.

Rayo Vallecano's position appears clear for now, with no indication they are willing to negotiate below the release clause. Unless Chelsea alter their approach, discussions are unlikely to progress quickly, making this a transfer saga worth monitoring over the coming weeks.
