Chelsea have agreed an unusual transfer arrangement for Atalanta defender Honest Ahanor, with the teenager set to spend this season on loan at Crystal Palace before moving permanently to Stamford Bridge.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Palace have accelerated negotiations for the highly-rated defender and will take him directly on loan from Atalanta for the 2026/27 campaign.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will announce a pre-agreement to sign Ahanor permanently for €48million, with the transfer formally taking effect ahead of the 2027/28 season.

The complicated structure has been designed to navigate Premier League loan regulations.

Ahanor heading to Crystal Palace first

Chelsea have effectively secured Ahanor's long-term future but will have to wait a year before officially adding him to Xabi Alonso's squad.

Rather than completing the €48m transfer immediately and subsequently loaning the 18-year-old to Crystal Palace, Ahanor will remain an Atalanta player while spending the coming season at Selhurst Park.

Palace therefore receive the defender on loan from the Serie A club.

Once that temporary spell ends, Ahanor's pre-arranged permanent transfer from Atalanta to Chelsea will take effect.

It gives the youngster an opportunity to spend an entire campaign adapting to Premier League football before potentially joining Alonso's first-team squad.

Premier League rule explains unusual Chelsea structure

The reasoning behind the arrangement centres on Chelsea's existing business with Crystal Palace.

Chelsea have already sent Alex Disasi on loan to Palace, creating a regulatory obstacle to another temporary move between the clubs.

Under Premier League rules, Chelsea would not be permitted to loan a second player to the same club.

That means Chelsea could not simply complete Ahanor's permanent signing from Atalanta this summer and immediately send him across London to Palace.

Instead, Atalanta will remain Ahanor's parent club throughout the loan.

Chelsea's involvement will initially be limited to announcing the pre-agreement guaranteeing his €48m transfer for the following season.

Chelsea secure another major young talent

The agreement represents a considerable commitment from Chelsea given Ahanor's age.

Born in 2008, the defender has already emerged as one of Italian football's most highly regarded young defensive prospects.

Chelsea's willingness to commit €48m a year before his arrival demonstrates how strongly the club believe in his long-term potential.

The Palace loan could also provide an important developmental step. Rather than immediately competing for minutes in Alonso's squad, Ahanor will have the opportunity to gain regular experience in England before arriving at Stamford Bridge.

For Palace, meanwhile, the arrangement provides another defensive option without requiring an immediate permanent investment.

Key Points

  • Honest Ahanor is set to join Crystal Palace on loan directly from Atalanta.
  • Chelsea have agreed a €48million permanent transfer for the defender from 2027/28.
  • Chelsea will initially announce a pre-agreement rather than completing the transfer this summer.
  • The structure is required because Chelsea have already loaned Alex Disasi to Crystal Palace.
  • Ahanor will spend a full Premier League season with Palace before his planned Chelsea arrival.

What’s Next?

Crystal Palace are expected to complete Ahanor's loan from Atalanta, allowing the 18-year-old to begin his first season in English football.

Chelsea can then formally complete his €48m transfer next summer, with the unusual structure allowing all parties to proceed without breaching Premier League loan regulations.
