Chelsea suffered defeat in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Stamford Bridge, but new head coach Liam Rosenior was at least able to take positives from a late fight-back that keeps the tie alive.

Chelsea went into Wednesday night knowing they were just three wins away from silverware. A 3–2 loss has made that path steeper, but thanks largely to Alejandro Garnacho, it has not been closed off entirely. The Blues now head to the Emirates on February 3 still with something to fight for.

Rosenior faces first real examination

Rosenior’s opening fixture — a comfortable FA Cup win away at Charlton Athletic — offered a gentle introduction to his new role. This, however, represented his first true examination at the helm.

Chelsea entered the contest severely depleted. Reece James, Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto all failed late fitness tests, while illness ruled out Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap.

As a result, Rosenior handed starts to Marc Guiu, Josh Acheampong and Andrey Santos, while leaning on senior figures elsewhere. The opening exchanges, however, quickly exposed Chelsea’s inexperience.

Arsenal punish Chelsea mistakes

Arsenal were relentless from the outset, pressing aggressively and controlling the tempo. Ben White opened the scoring early before Viktor Gyökeres doubled the lead soon after the restart, with both goals heavily aided by errors from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The visitors’ third goal was the standout moment of the evening, with Martin Zubimendi producing a sublime finish. Mikel Merino could have added a fourth, underlining Arsenal’s dominance.

For Rosenior, the match offered a harsh but valuable lesson in managing momentum and concentration during elite-level fixtures.

Garnacho sparks late revival

Chelsea were fortunate to trail by only one goal at half-time after repeatedly playing themselves into danger from the back. At 2–0 down, inspiration was required — and it arrived from Garnacho.

The winger has struggled to make an impact off the bench in recent weeks, leading to understandable scepticism among the home crowd as he prepared to enter the fray. He quickly proved those doubts misplaced.

Garnacho’s first came when he latched onto Pedro Neto’s cross, cushioning the ball before firing inside Kepa Arrizabalaga’s near post. After Zubimendi restored Arsenal’s two-goal cushion, Garnacho struck again, volleying home from a half-cleared corner to reignite belief.

The goals prompted restrained celebrations from both player and head coach — understandable given the circumstances — and sparked a frantic finale driven by Neto, Estevao and the two-goal hero.

Hope remains for second leg

An equaliser never arrived, but Chelsea’s response mattered. Despite sloppy build-up play and missed opportunities, effort was never in doubt.

Rosenior will also draw encouragement from the expected return of key players for the second leg. Moises Caicedo will be available after suspension, while James, Palmer and Gusto are all expected back, along with Delap and Gittens.

Facing Arsenal at the Emirates with a one-goal deficit remains a daunting task, particularly against the league’s form side. Yet Chelsea have something tangible to cling to — belief, momentum and reinforcements.

Key insights

  • Chelsea lost 3–2 but kept the tie alive
  • Garnacho’s late double transformed the contest
  • Arsenal capitalised on Chelsea errors
  • Rosenior saw fight and response from his players
  • Key absentees are expected back for the second leg

What’s next?

Chelsea now turn their attention to domestic matters before returning to north London in early February. Turning this tie around will require a near-perfect performance — but Rosenior’s first home defeat still offered evidence that his message is beginning to land.

Can Chelsea produce something special at the Emirates — or will Arsenal’s control prove decisive over two legs?
