Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged his players to keep moving forward despite losing ground on Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

City were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium, a result that leaves them seven points behind league leaders Arsenal. The Gunners strengthened their position at the top with a 1-0 win away to Brighton on the same night.

Although City still have a game in hand, the dropped points increase the pressure heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

Guardiola admitted disappointment with the result but praised his players’ effort after they twice took the lead during the match.

Antoine Semenyo opened the scoring shortly after the half-hour mark with his sixth goal since joining in January. Nottingham Forest responded early in the second half through Morgan Gibbs-White.

Rodri restored City’s advantage from a corner, but Elliot Anderson’s equaliser ensured the visitors secured a valuable point.

“Disappointed for the result. We did everything again, we did not concede much and we had chances at the end and during the game as well. We keep going. The players tried to do their best. When you see how they run, but of course in a game at home and at this stage of the season it’s important.” — Pep Guardiola, TNT Sports

The City manager emphasised that his side cannot dwell on the setback.

“We don’t have time to look back, so look forward. Now it’s on to Newcastle in the FA Cup, then Real Madrid in the Champions League. Game by game.” — Pep Guardiola

Manchester City fall further behind Arsenal

Arsenal’s victory at Brighton extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points. However, City still have one match in hand, meaning the gap could narrow depending on future results.

Having followed Manchester City’s recent performances, their attacking quality has often created enough chances to win matches. However, occasional defensive lapses have allowed opponents to stay within reach.

It remains too early to determine whether the title race has shifted decisively with several weeks remaining in the season.

Forest earn valuable point in survival fight

While the draw represented a setback for City’s title hopes, it provided a major boost for Nottingham Forest in their battle to remain in the Premier League.

Goals from Gibbs-White and Anderson ensured Forest twice responded to City’s leads, demonstrating resilience against one of the division’s strongest sides.
