Chelsea remain keen on Álvaro Carreras despite Real Madrid rejection

Chelsea are refusing to walk away from their pursuit of Álvaro Carreras despite seeing an opening bid rejected by Real Madrid.

The Blues are searching for a new first-choice left-back following Marc Cucurella's move to the Spanish giants, and Carreras has emerged as one of the club's leading targets. While negotiations are still in their early stages, Chelsea have already discovered just how difficult a deal will be.

Chelsea tested Madrid's resolve with an initial offer worth €25 million, but the proposal was turned down without hesitation.

Reports in Spain suggest Real Madrid value the 23-year-old significantly higher, with estimates ranging between €50 million and €60 million depending on the source.

That leaves Chelsea with a sizeable gap to bridge if they decide to return with an improved offer.

Madrid's stance is understandable. Carreras only arrived from Benfica last summer, and despite an inconsistent first campaign in Spain, the club still believe he has an important role to play.

Chelsea's interest is being driven by Xabi Alonso, who is understood to be a long-time admirer of the Spanish defender.

Having previously worked with Carreras, Alonso believes the full-back has the technical quality and tactical flexibility to thrive in his system. During their time together, Carreras was even used as a left-sided centre-back on occasions, highlighting the versatility Chelsea value.

That belief has not changed despite Madrid's firm response.

Even if Chelsea improve their offer, convincing the player may be just as challenging.

Carreras is reportedly keen to remain at Real Madrid despite slipping down the pecking order during the second half of last season. The departure of Fran García has also improved his chances of earning more minutes, giving him another reason to stay at the Bernabéu.

Chelsea hope the prospect of becoming the club's first-choice left-back could eventually change his mind, but that conversation is unlikely to progress unless the two clubs first move closer on valuation.

Chelsea must now decide whether to increase their offer or turn their attention to alternative left-back targets. Real Madrid remain under no pressure to sell, while Carreras appears content to stay and fight for his place. Unless one of those positions changes, negotiations are likely to remain difficult over the coming weeks.
