Manchester United claimed their first Premier League victory of the season after coming from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes producing a captain's performance.
Michael Carrick's side endured another difficult start and fell behind to Leif Davis' opener, but Fernandes dragged United back into the contest before completing a hat-trick after the interval.
Bryan Mbeumo eventually added United's fifth after earlier hitting the crossbar, while Chuba Akpom scored Ipswich's second following a late defensive mistake from Lisandro Martinez.
Ipswich punish another slow United start
After losing their opening Premier League fixture, United were searching for their first points of the 2026/27 campaign.
Carrick started with Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui among the substitutes, but his side again looked vulnerable early on.
Senne Lammens initially made an important intervention to deny Ipswich, only for Davis to break the deadlock later in the first half.
Abdul Fatawu Issahaku found the advancing left-back, who powered his effort beyond Lammens to give the visitors a deserved advantage.
United responded before half-time.
A defensive slip allowed Matheus Cunha to capitalise and release Fernandes, who emphatically beat Kjell Scherpen at his near post to make it 1-1.
Fernandes takes control after half-time
Ipswich introduced Akpom after the interval, but United quickly began taking control of the match.
Mbeumo somehow failed to put the hosts ahead when he struck the crossbar from close range with the goal at his mercy.
The miss ultimately proved irrelevant.
Jacob Greaves turned the ball into his own net to put United ahead before the hosts were awarded a penalty. Fernandes converted calmly to score his second and establish a two-goal advantage.
The Portuguese midfielder was not finished.
After 68 minutes, Fernandes struck again from close range to complete his hat-trick and effectively end Ipswich's hopes of recovering.
Mbeumo scores as United hit five
Fernandes then turned provider, setting up Mbeumo for Manchester United's fifth goal and completing a hugely influential individual performance.
There was still time for Ipswich to reduce the deficit.
A mistake from Martinez presented Akpom with an opportunity, and the former Ajax forward took advantage to make it 5-2.
It did little to change the outcome as United finally registered their first three Premier League points under Carrick this season.
For a side that had been under immediate pressure following their opening defeat, the manner of the comeback will provide encouragement — although conceding twice and another uncertain start showed Carrick still has defensive issues to address.
