Brighton and Hove Albion target Said El Mala has admitted considering transfer approaches before deciding to remain at FC Köln, while revealing his ambition to play Champions League football.
The 20-year-old Germany international attracted interest from several clubs during the summer, including Brighton, who reportedly explored signing both him and his brother Malek.
However, El Mala signed a new contract until 2031 and insists he remains happy in Germany.
Said El Mala explains decision to reject transfer interest
Speaking to RTL and Sky Sport, El Mala revealed why he stayed despite receiving several approaches.
"I chose Köln because I simply felt comfortable here. I didn't want to leave, even though there were many inquiries," he said.
"Of course, I listened to what was on offer—that's completely normal."
The winger explained that discussions with Köln's management and coaching staff convinced him to remain.
He believes the club has delivered on the sporting plans presented during those talks.
Brighton continue monitoring Bundesliga winger
According to Sky Sport Germany, Brighton remain interested in El Mala after an attempted double deal involving his older brother Malek failed to materialise last summer.
The Seagulls had also held discussions with El Mala's representatives earlier in 2026.
Sky reports that Brighton continue scouting both brothers, although a January move is not currently planned.
A renewed approach in summer 2027 remains possible.
El Mala has registered four goals and one assist in nine Bundesliga appearances this season, strengthening his reputation as one of Germany's emerging attacking talents.
Champions League ambition shapes long-term plans
Despite committing his future to Köln, El Mala has ambitions beyond the Bundesliga club.
"I want to achieve great things one day and play in the Champions League," he explained.
"I can't say exactly when that moment will come—but it will happen eventually."
His comments suggest a willingness to consider opportunities later in his career rather than an immediate desire to leave.
