Brighton’s €35m Said El Mala bid rejected as FC Köln demand €50m

Brighton and Hove Albion have seen their first formal move for Said El Mala knocked back, with 1. FC Köln rejecting a €35million offer and making it clear they will not entertain a sale below €50m.

According to Sky Germany, Brighton’s proposal landed this week after months of groundwork on the player, but Köln’s response was immediate. The Bundesliga side consider the offer well below their internal valuation of the winger, who has rapidly become one of the most highly-rated young attacking players in Germany.

For now, talks between the two clubs have cooled.

That does not mean the transfer is dead, but it does underline how far apart both sides remain on valuation.

Brighton have been working on El Mala since last summer, identifying him early as part of their long-term recruitment strategy. What has changed since then is the player’s market. Brighton have positioned themselves as frontrunners for weeks, but that advantage only matters if they are willing to match the price.

Reports suggest the Premier League club have already made a strong move on personal terms, offering El Mala a contract worth around five times his current wages. That points to serious intent from Brighton and suggests convincing the player may not be difficult.

The bigger obstacle is convincing Köln.

And Brighton are not alone.

Chelsea FC, Everton FC, Fulham FC, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have all been linked with the winger over the last few months, and Köln will know that fresh competition only strengthens their position.

That is why there is no panic from their side.

Sky Germany describe the club as calm and measured in their handling of the situation, confident that time works in their favour rather than against them.

For Brighton, the next move becomes crucial.

Do they stretch beyond their comfort zone for a player they clearly rate highly, or step back and risk losing ground in a transfer race that could become far more expensive?
