Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has received praise from Dutch football pundits following his impressive performance against Manchester City, while Sunderland's Robin Roefs faces increasing scrutiny.

The contrasting fortunes of the Netherlands internationals have renewed debate over who deserves to be the country's first-choice goalkeeper.

Verbruggen produced several important saves during Brighton's 1-0 Premier League victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Verbruggen praised after Manchester City victory

Speaking on Dutch television programme Vandaag Inside, Johan Derksen admitted Verbruggen had impressed him despite his previous reservations.

"I'm not usually a huge fan of his, but he played truly excellently," Derksen said.

The pundit also praised Brighton's performances, with Fabian Hürzeler's side sitting third in the Premier League.

Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen went further, declaring: "Verbruggen is simply the best goalkeeper in the Netherlands."

Driessen referenced Roefs' recent performances when explaining his preference for the Brighton goalkeeper.

Derksen, however, acknowledged that Sunderland's defensive struggles have made life particularly difficult for Roefs.

Sunderland's Robin Roefs faces growing scrutiny

Roefs enjoyed an impressive debut season at Sunderland, helping the club establish itself following promotion to the Premier League.

His performances previously prompted debate over whether he should challenge Verbruggen for the Netherlands' starting position.

However, Sunderland have struggled during the opening months of the 2026/27 campaign.

Régis Le Bris' side currently sit bottom of the Premier League with five points from nine matches.

The Black Cats have also conceded 17 league goals, placing additional pressure on their defensive unit.

Meanwhile, Verbruggen has benefited from Brighton's strong form, with the Seagulls keeping six clean sheets in their opening nine league fixtures.

Brighton and Sunderland face contrasting challenges

Brighton are competing near the top of the Premier League while balancing their Conference League commitments.

Sunderland, meanwhile, face a difficult domestic campaign alongside Europa League football.

Both goalkeepers will need to maintain their performances as the fixture schedule becomes increasingly demanding.
