Brentford’s academy has reached a major milestone after being awarded Category One status, marking a rapid rise just four years after its relaunch.

The upgrade means the club will compete in Premier League 2 and the Under-18 Premier League from the start of the 2026/27 season, placing their academy structure among the elite in English football.

Brentford academy earns Category One status after rapid progress

The decision comes only two years after Brentford were granted Category Two status, underlining the speed of their development since returning to a full academy model.

Club officials see the move as recognition of long-term planning and investment following their promotion to the Premier League in 2021. It also reflects a broader shift in strategy after years of relying primarily on the B team pathway.

“This is an important milestone for the Academy and a significant step for the club… reaching this level in a relatively short period is a meaningful achievement.” — David Rainford, Brentford Academy Director

B team model remains central to pathway

Despite the academy upgrade, Brentford will continue to operate their B team, which has been a key part of their development system since its introduction in 2016.

The model focuses on identifying players released from other academies and giving them a direct route into senior football. That approach has delivered tangible results, with players progressing into the first team and contributing regularly.

From the club’s recent seasons, the B team has consistently provided depth and opportunities for emerging talent. However, integrating it alongside a Category One academy will require careful balance moving forward.

Opportunity and responsibility increase

Category One status brings access to higher-level competitions, improved recruitment reach and increased resources. It also raises expectations around player development and progression.

“Category One status brings both increased opportunity and responsibility… it strengthens our ability to develop players capable of progressing to the first team.” — David Rainford

The club will now compete directly with the top academies in the country, providing a more challenging environment for young players.
