Real Madrid hand Bernardo Silva new midfield role after Rodri transfer setback

Real Madrid have reportedly identified an internal solution after missing out on Rodri, with José Mourinho planning to reshape Bernardo Silva's role following the Portuguese midfielder's arrival from Manchester City.

The Spanish giants had hoped to sign Rodri this summer before the Ballon d'Or winner opted for Barcelona instead, forcing Mourinho to rethink his midfield plans.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Mourinho believes Bernardo Silva has the qualities to perform the role originally intended for Rodri.

Rather than deploying the Portugal international in an advanced position, the Real Madrid manager is considering using him in a deeper midfield role alongside a more defensive-minded partner.

Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde have both been identified as potential partners, with Bernardo expected to take responsibility for dictating play from the centre of the pitch.

One of the biggest reasons behind Mourinho's confidence is Bernardo's remarkable consistency during his time at Manchester City.

The Portuguese midfielder made 53 appearances in all competitions last season and has regularly surpassed the 50-game mark throughout his spell at the Etihad Stadium.

His durability and tactical intelligence are viewed as major assets as Real Madrid look to build a new-look midfield following Rodri's decision to join Barcelona.

While there is still time remaining in the transfer window, Mundo Deportivo reports Real Madrid are no longer prioritising another midfield signing.

Instead, the club believe they already possess the player capable of replacing Rodri's influence.

Having spent several years alongside Rodri at Manchester City, Bernardo is viewed as the ideal candidate to inherit many of the responsibilities the Spain international would have carried at the Santiago Bernabéu.
