Benfica presidential candidate Cristóvão Carvalho has hit the headlines after campaign ally and club legend Isaías suggested the Portuguese giants missed out on a golden opportunity to bring in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ new man Jhon Arias.

Speaking at a campaign event covered by A Bola, Isaías said the club’s summer signing Richard Ríos — a Colombian midfielder from Palmeiras — wouldn’t have been his pick. Instead, he would have targeted Arias, who joined Wolves from Fluminense earlier this summer.

The 58-year-old, a two-time Portuguese league winner with Benfica, doubled down on his belief that the club must “bring back the real Benfica” capable of competing in Europe’s elite competitions.

Isaías’ Direct Verdict on Benfica’s Transfer Choice

Introducing his preferred alternative, Isaías didn’t mince his words when asked about Benfica’s summer business.

“We’re looking for versatility and leadership — Arias offers both,” Isaías said. “He’s a great player, but I personally wouldn’t have brought him in. I would’ve signed another Colombian who is now at Wolverhampton: Arias.” — *A Bola*

Why the Arias Comment Matters

Isaías argued that Ríos was not a nailed-on starter at Palmeiras when he first broke through, only gaining consistent minutes after teammate Zé Rafael suffered a major injury. While Ríos’ arrival in Lisbon was hailed by many fans — especially given interest from Nottingham Forest and Everton — Isaías insists Benfica could have aimed higher.

Arias, meanwhile, has hit the ground running at Molineux. Under Vítor Pereira, Wolves have undergone a significant rebuild following Matheus Cunha’s big-money move to Manchester United and Rayan Aït-Nouri’s transfer to Manchester City. Arias has already impressed in pre-season friendlies, offering pace, creativity, and a direct goal threat from the right wing.

Jhon Arias vs Richard Ríos — 2024/25 Stats

Player Club (2024/25) Appearances Goals Assists Key Passes per 90
Jhon Arias Fluminense 38 9 11 2.4
Richard Ríos Palmeiras 33 3 4 1.1

Analyst Verdict

From a tactical perspective, Isaías’ preference makes sense. Arias offers explosive width and final-third penetration, qualities Benfica have occasionally lacked in recent Champions League campaigns. Ríos, while technically assured and defensively disciplined, plays deeper and contributes less directly to goals.

For Wolves, Arias’ versatility — able to operate on either flank or centrally behind the striker — could prove invaluable in the Premier League, especially in a season where Pereira’s side will need fresh attacking solutions after losing two key starters.

Key Insights

  • Benfica presidential race heating up with transfer-related criticisms.
  • Isaías believes Jhon Arias would have been a smarter signing than Richard Ríos.
  • Wolves coach Vítor Pereira integrating Arias after losing Cunha and Aït-Nouri.
  • Arias expected to play a major attacking role in Wolves’ 2025/26 campaign.

What’s Next?

Benfica’s presidential election campaign will continue to provide headlines in the coming weeks, with Carvalho expected to outline more of his footballing vision. Meanwhile, Wolves fans won’t have to wait long to see Arias in competitive action — he’s set to feature in their Premier League opener against Brighton.

Should Benfica have gone for Arias instead — or will Ríos prove the better signing in Europe?
