Bart van Rooij has suggested he would still welcome a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer despite the club's relegation to the Championship.
The FC Twente defender has enjoyed an impressive season in the Netherlands and increasingly looks ready for a step into a bigger league. Wolves attempted to sign the 24-year-old during the January transfer window, but the move ultimately failed after Twente decided against selling one of their key players midway through the campaign.
At the time, Wolves' difficult position near the bottom of the Premier League raised questions around the appeal of such a move. However, Van Rooij's latest comments indicate that was never a major concern.
Bart van Rooij explains Wolves attraction
Speaking about his future, Van Rooij made clear that the overall project at Wolves appealed to him rather than simply the division they were competing in.
“I believe I have proven that I can handle this level, that I can excel here. Now I am curious to see if I can do that a step higher as well.” — Bart van Rooij
The Dutch defender then explained why Wolves remained an attractive possibility even during a difficult period for the club.
“If you look at Wolves’ position in the standings, it was indeed not ideal. But I found the whole picture interesting.” — Bart van Rooij
Reports earlier this year suggested Wolves were prepared to pay around €10 million to secure his services, but Twente reportedly refused to negotiate.
Having followed Championship promotion races over recent years, ambitious relegated clubs often remain attractive destinations if there is a clear pathway back to the Premier League. Project stability can sometimes outweigh short-term circumstances.
Wolves preparing for life in the Championship
With relegation now confirmed, attention at Molineux has shifted towards rebuilding and planning for an immediate return to the top flight.
Recruitment is likely to play a major role in that process and Van Rooij appears to fit the profile of a player capable of strengthening the squad both immediately and over the longer term.

What's next
The summer window could now determine whether Wolves revisit their previous interest.
Twente's position may also be different compared to January, when protecting their squad during the season was a priority. If Wolves decide to return, they may find a more favourable environment for negotiations.
For Van Rooij, the objective appears straightforward: taking the next step in his career.
Would Bart van Rooij be a smart signing for Wolves as they target an immediate Premier League return?
