Leon Goretzka is currently unavailable for Aston Villa because of irritation in his left knee, with the club taking a cautious approach to prevent the problem from developing into something more serious.

The 31-year-old joined Villa on a free transfer this summer but is still waiting to make his debut for Unai Emery’s side.

According to BILD, Goretzka’s knee has reacted to the increased workload after a period without regular match practice. The midfielder has already missed two matches and is now expected to remain unavailable until after the international break.

Goretzka suffering from knee irritation

There had been uncertainty surrounding Goretzka’s condition after the midfielder confirmed on Instagram that his body had reacted negatively to the increased workload since arriving at Villa Park.

BILD now report that the specific problem is irritation in his left knee.

Aston Villa are treating the situation as a precaution rather than allowing Goretzka to continue training and potentially aggravate the issue.

That is particularly important given the midfielder’s history with the same knee.

Goretzka underwent arthroscopic surgery in the summer of 2022 to remove loose joint bodies from his left knee. While the current problem is not considered a major injury, that history gives Villa an obvious reason to be careful.

Villa prepared to wait for Goretzka

Goretzka has made clear that he intends to use the international break to complete his recovery.

“Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload following my time without match practice,” he explained in his message to supporters.

The midfielder is nevertheless happy with his early experience at Villa and insisted that his first days at the club have reinforced his belief that he made the right move.

For Emery, the priority will now be getting Goretzka fully fit rather than rushing him into the team.

The German is expected to miss Villa’s next four matches, including their Champions League meeting with Club Brugge.

According to BILD, the earliest realistic date for his Aston Villa debut is October 10 against Brentford.
