Arsenal revive Julián Álvarez pursuit as Atlético Madrid face pressure to sell

Arsenal have reportedly re-entered the race to sign Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez after the Spanish club's financial situation reopened the possibility of a summer transfer.

The Gunners had previously cooled their interest as the Argentina international made it clear that Barcelona was his preferred destination. However, with Atlético now needing to generate funds before the transfer window closes, Mikel Arteta's side are once again monitoring developments.

Barcelona remain confident of winning the race, but Arsenal have not yet given up hope.

According to reports in Spain, Atlético Madrid are under increasing pressure to balance their finances after an ambitious summer of recruitment.

The club have already strengthened several areas of Diego Simeone's squad and are continuing to pursue further additions, leaving player sales high on the agenda.

However, with limited progress on those deals, the sale of Álvarez is now reportedly viewed as the quickest way to generate the necessary income.

Arsenal are expected to step up their interest following the conclusion of the World Cup, although Barcelona still believe they are in the strongest position.

Club president Joan Laporta has already confirmed that the Catalan side have submitted an offer and are unwilling to increase it, convinced Atlético will eventually soften their stance.

Barcelona also believe Arsenal's renewed involvement is partly helping Atlético create greater competition for the striker rather than representing a genuine threat to their pursuit.

Even so, Arsenal continue to monitor the situation closely in case negotiations between Spain's two biggest clubs reach an impasse.

One factor continues to favour Barcelona.

Álvarez is understood to have made a move to Camp Nou his priority, giving Hansi Flick's side a significant advantage if Atlético ultimately decide to sell.

From Arsenal's perspective, however, the uncertainty surrounding Atlético's finances means the transfer cannot yet be ruled out. Arteta remains keen to add another elite striker, and Álvarez's versatility, work rate and proven record at the highest level make him an attractive option should the opportunity arise.

For now, much will depend on Atlético's financial position once the World Cup concludes and whether Barcelona's current proposal proves sufficient.
